Need Help on Choke Tubes
« on: November 15, 2013, 04:35:04 PM »
This will be my second year of duck hunting and I have heard a little bit about choke tubes and how modified ones can be beneficial. Just curious to know whether they are that important and if so which ones are the best to buy for overall price and quality.

Chokes make a world of difference. I've tried many brands in many guns and best for performance and money is a no brainer. Kicks chokes. We all chose kicks high flyer chokes in full. Even and tight patterns. Safe with steel up to 1550 fps and size shot up to bb. Way less cripples and good patterns with most every shell we test. You will never look back on the choice. I've wasted lots of time and money that I should have just went with these chokes in the first place. Good luck

How far are your typical shots. The only reason I'm asking is because under 20 regularly could be a little tight if your not used to it. I typically shoot 20 out to 50 yards and keep a really good pattern. But if your shots are 10 to 30 average go with modified in kicks. If your shots are around my range go with full. Last year I shot 96 birds with the kicks full. And went with a 28 bird kill streak without missing. Birds just plain die if you have good aim.

I have the Kicks Full in my 10 gauge and Kicks Mod in my 12 gauge.  I put a lot of birds on the ground last year.  I also shoot year around and am a fairly accomplished shot, so I don't know if it was my choke or my shooting skills.   :chuckle:
Cut em!
It's not the shells!  It's the shooter!

20-50 is usually the range I was shooting last year. But I only went probably ten times, now whether my shooting range will change with more experience its hard to say but I would have to figure that 20-50 is more than likely the right range for me.

Well if they do get closer no big deal just expect a few extra pellets on bird and a quick clean/messy kill.

My gun didn't like the Carlson choke I put through it. Poor patterns with a lot of loads. But that's just me. Yes it is cheaper though, but I got better patterns with my factory choke.
