407 Ends with disappointment
« on: November 18, 2013, 07:39:38 AM »
Just wondering if anyone harvested deer in 407 for the late season or if you know someone who did?   I hunted hard even took time off work and NADA sirs.
Thinking to go eat next season.
I'm very tired.

Sorry you didn't have any luck...and honestly- "luck" is a big part of blacktail hunting. You can't pattern them, they don't come out in the open except at night, and there just aren't as many as there used to be.

Having said that, I'm curious about the above quote. Does that mean you're going out to eat next season instead of going hunting?

was out 3 mornings and didn't see a deer.  Access is getting a lot tougher in this unit, even timber companies are posting no access and no trespassing signs.

I was out in the unit. On Saturday morning I was standing in a group of trees in the middle of a clear cut and had a buck and doe walk up right behind me, didn't hear them until they were about 10 yards away then they got my smell and couldn't get a shot off. Headed back into town and ran into a guy who showed us a picture of a nice 3x4 that he took the day before on private property, called the guy and we got permission. Hunted the afternoon and next morning and saw a few does but that was it.

I hunted 407 hard this year. I have multiseason, it's the first time in 7 years I haven't taken a buck out of there. I didn't hunt late season, but I have archery left in December to at least get a doe or something for meat.

It's become a tough unit access wise but I think the deer numbers are fine. To answer your question yes and yes for harvest. One thing I did notice yesterday is most hunters (only an observation) started kinda late. I drove by 3 gates that I hunt at 7 and 0 rigs, all 3 have great deer and it's all about 3+ miles in. When I was headed to work around 1030 they all had multiple trucks at them. I personally like the mornings and start at those gates 2+ hours before light.   :twocents:

I think deer numbers are ok to me and I believe its problem with numbers of Cougars has done to all Deer plus Deer getting killed on road lately over there.  I checked WDFW book look like 407 has "unlimited kill" on Cougars plus outside East of 407 which WDFW request all hunters to kill as much as possible up to 15 Cougars around 418,426,437 which it explain why Deer numbers are down.  :sry:  We need open Hound hunting.

Once it snow, I hope you guys go find trax and start follow until you find them and shoot them.
 Good luck.

Ive been archery hunting on some private land this year, it had heavy action on from deer on my game cam (all @ night during modern) then I saw a jump in bobcat scat and all sign disappeared last week of modern. I haven't checked my cam in about 4 weeks so we'll see if they come back. That being said, I'd get a hound if they opened up dog hunts for cougs.

For me, I think the fog hurt our modern hunts. It was impenetrable fog for 2 full weekends for me. My dad in law did get a decent buck but totally luck, in the fog the buck ran in front of his truck as he was quitting hunting for the day (I stayed out in the woods) then it stayed there while he piled out of the truck twice (truck started to roll) and shot it.

I would love to shoot a coug in 407 but its so dang thick over here I can't imagine i could ever get close to one even tracking in the snow. I got on fresh bobcat tracks before but they always headed into the choked brush and 3rd growth and its impossible to move through.

I am just curious as to why you would be disappointed?

It is hunting. No guarantees should know that going in.

Think of it this way.. You are in the 70 percentile group and not the 30..   :chuckle: :tung:

Here is a pic of my Blacktail if it helps ya cope any...
