Took the new camera out today....I think I like it!!
« on: November 18, 2013, 03:08:06 PM »
Well, I needed something other than my point and shoot so I decided to buy a new camera.  After a few days of research I chose to go with the Nikon P520.  It has a 42 times optical zoom and some fantastic options.  I figured it was the next best thing to a DSLR which I will never use to its full potential......at least at this point in my photography career..... :chuckle:

Hope you enjoy the pics.  If you have any pointers for me feel free to comment.  All these pics were taken with programmed settings.  As I learn I can set up my own program or settings dependent on the situation / lighting / etc. etc.

With exception of the roses and dog....all the animals were 80 to 200 yards away.  The pic with the two does has a third doe hidden in the pic (really hard to see) and that pic was 200-220 yards.

Cool pictures. Not sure that one ram could get any closer to that ewe peeing without getting wet.

Wow!

I might have to look closely at that for back country hunts.  That would save about five pounds of pack weight.  I have a similar HP that takes great pictures, but does not have that level of zoom and takes AA batteries that are always going dead.  Doesn't save me much weight when I have to take 30 extra batteries ;)
He asked, Do you ever give a short simple answer?  I replied, "Nope."

I am pretty much sold on this camera, but was hoping you could answer some questions:  What SD card do you use?  Are you able to take almost dark photos with 42X magnification? I am finally upgrading from my 35mm, and my primary use would be wildlife photography. Appreciate your input.

Yes it will take pictures with low light, but I highly recommend a tripod otherwise they tend to come out blurry.  I will post pics tonight of critters right at last light.  I will also post random photos that I have taken just playing around with different features.

It also has a flash for closer night shots.

I use the 16 gb sandisk that came with my camera.  It was a bundle from costco.

I am in love with the camera for wildlife viewing.  It gives you a super zoom without having to buy a telephoto for a DSLR camaera.  It is a fraction of the price too which is awesome.

All these pics were taken in the last 30 minutes of light.  The two point that is pretty dark was taken in literally the last minute of light and it was 50-60 yards away and moving.  Really not to bad a pic for the conditions.

Here are a couple sunset pics and one color metering picture.  I think the color metering is amazing, I can't wait for summer to try this feature outside with some sunflower fields.

Also thought the picture with the deer was awesome.  I like the way it captured the water droplets at the bottom.
