This is why I never understood the WDFW making bear baiting illegal?

They didn't.  The voting populace did. >:(

99% of rifle hunters go out and shoot the first buck they see...
The statement above is pure horse*censored* archery 288.

As far as baiting, it's currently legal in WA, I'm not familiar with other states, but it's purely a personal decision.

THE END

Well....I think your "THE END" comment is not going to hold up.

I liked hunting whitetails in Alabama.  No baiting allowed, long seasons, up to 3 deer per day and you can hunt with a spear!!!! I hunted there in Jan of 2010 and it only took 20 minutes for me go get a nice "10 pointer" with a shotgun.  My cousins all hunt with spears but made it very plain that baiting was strictly prohibited, even hunting over livestock feeding areas.  They sit in trees along well traveled trails and wait them out.

A little sensitive dibbs? Sure those spikes sure are succulent but not everyone likes to shoot em.

Here is my  :twocents: Not for me ....I love to hunt ....you know get off your butt and get in the woods and find the game ....that's called hunting ...but if it floats your boat then have at it ....long as it is legal its your choice ! ;)

One more thing .....it is legal to bait deer -elk and cougar !! The only animal that( can not) be baited is bear !

So people who bait don't get into the woods and find game?

:yeah: I found that having salt and cameras in the woods gets me out in the woods more because I actually have tools to work with other than just looking for does and fawns in the summertime.
Kindly do not attempt to cloud the issue with too many facts.

They go in heavy.  I haven't baited in a couple seasons, but might try to for this coming elk season.  When I did last for blacktail, it involved 70# packs of apples or 50 lb blocks of salt or deer chow hiked in about 1 1/2 miles every week.  For elk I was just hauling the mineral licks at 50 lbs for a couple miles.  Worst was hauling in stuff for the high hunt.

I found tons of game in the woods.  A lot of folks wouldn't believe the game I found.

So I did bait and if I think it would work I would bait again. Usually we set the bait out deep in the woods near some good trails. Then we stalk and hunt for a while and eventually circle back around to the bait. We mix it up each day. The methods have not worked for us yet but it's ok, I know eventually something will work and that will be come our method of hunting. Whatever works!

I don't hunt over bait. I don't know if I ever will, but I will say that if you guys think there's not a lot of work that goes into it, you're wrong. It's just like treestand hunting. Lots of folks criticize the guys that hunt out of treestands. They've obviously never done it.
One of my cameras was in the middle of nowhere 2 miles from a road down in a hole full of blown down trees, tangles, etc. Anytime you guys think it's not work, you're welcome to tag along. The only thing I ask is that we split the bait and other gear between 2 packs.
 :twocents:

Exactly...reason they bash it is they couldnt even begin to pack 40-60 lbs up a thick covered mt side...let along hang a tree stand... oh and pack that in along with spikes, saws, ropes hangers etc...its a workout to a hang a stand

Hi guys,
I just wanted to add my 2 cents in on the baiting argument.  I now live in SC and have been putting out corn for the past 7 years.  This is what I have learned over the last 7 years of baiting:
1.  Does, yearlings, small bucks, and mature bucks all love corn.
2.  Does, yearlings, and small bucks will feed on the corn during daylight hours.  The big  mature bucks often times only hit the corn piles during hours of darkness, and typically from 2200 to 0400.
3.  I get thousands and thousands of pictures, but only a handfull of the pics I get are mature bucks.
4.  I have only shot one mature buck off a corn pile in the past 7 years.  All other mature bucks have been killed 100-300 yards from the corn pile.  Often times the larger mature bucks will watch the does and younger bucks feed, and then wait until dark to come out and feed.
5.  During the rut, you can forget about killing any bucks over a corn pile.  That is unless they are tending a doe who comes out to feed.  Typically though the buck will hang in the woods/brush and just watch.

I have found that baiting deer is a great way to put meat in the freezer, but not a great way to put antlers on the wall.  If you are a meat hunter, I would recommend baiting and hunting over the bait.  If you are trying to kill a large mature buck, then you're better off hanging a tree stand, ground blind etc.  some distance off the baiting site.  I have lots and lots of experience with baiting, food plots, and feeding year round.  Please feel free to ask away, gripe, etc.  I am by no means an expert, but have been baiting and feeding deer year round for the last 7 years.  I just became a pro staff member for Big Bucks Plus.  BBP makes their own gravity feeders and 20% protein deer feed.  When it comes to feeding deer year round, I feed them from January to July, then switch to corn in August.  By the end of August the deer down here have stopped growing their antlers and will hit the corn hard.  Good luck!

Part of the reason that I put out bait during hunting season and hunt over it is not to ATTRACT deer or elk but, like my cameras, to hopefully stop them in certain spots for either a shot or a picture. I think 95% of the battle is picking the "right" spot to put it out over any other aspect. I choose my spots the same regardless if there is going to be bait out or not. I don't rely on it to bring them in as I am confident in my scouting but I do like knowing that when they come in, they might stop long enough for a taste or a sniff for me to make a clean and ethical shot.  :twocents:

Baiting is extremely hard to be effective at.... I have been baiting blacktails for 5 years and killed 2 Pope and Young class bucks over bait, the second one yesterday.... apples are IMO the best you can use.... when deer come to a bait, they are on high alert... I can assure you it is much easier to spot stalk mulies or bugle/cow call in bulls then it is to kill mature deer over bait.. I have done all 3 of those more then a few times in my hunting life so far. Blacktails are impossible to pattern.... I had day pics of my 2 shooter bucks aug 8.. and not again until Nov 20.... the buck I killed came back 5 days later at 1030 in the am... he was hungry as he went directly for the bait, leaving his does 30 yrds away.... he was EXTREMELY cautious and even though I did everything right, he still never made it to the bait and was on his way out when he stooped at 15 yrds and gave me the shot..... they know those apples were never there before, but they can not resist how tasty they are.... I spent over 60 hrs in stand since the opener in oregon and my buck was the first time I actually saw it with my own eyes..... the other reason baiting works is because it brings in does, and at least a few times she will have a BF with her.... I helped my buddy kill a nice mulie over bait with his ML last week as well.... done right, it works very well but I assure you it is far far from easy.... Here are a few pics of my buck........
