A great hunter once told me that sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good. On this particular day luck was on my side. Tired from a week of elk hunting I decided to leave my pack in the truck and travel light. About a half hour down the skid road that I was walking, my body started to remind me why I keep mountain money (TP) in my pack. You got to be kidding me, the one day I leave my pack in the truck I REALLY need it. At this point I’m prairie doggin bad so I stop walking to look for some leaves or something. As I am standing there I notice something walking around the corner of the road towards me. With the early morning sun behind the animal and in the shadows of the trees it looked dark grey, almost black, and very ghostly. As it walked it looked back over its shoulder a couple times and then I spotted the points on its ears. Bobcat! It still had not noticed me standing in the road. I clicked the safety off on my rifle and I swung up on the cat. It froze at 35 yards facing almost directly at me. As soon as my crosshairs rested on its chest I squeezed the trigger. As the rifle recoiled I saw hair fly off the far side of the cat and then all was still. I got it. It lay in the road motionless as I chambered another round. I walked to within ten feet of the cat and stopped. After a couple minutes of staring at it I walked around behind it and poked it in the butt with my rifle and was very relieved when it didn’t jump up and rip my face off. Still not satisfied, I poked it in the face too. Even then, I was scared to reach down and touch it. I can’t imagine what it’s like to walk up to a big kitty. After some pictures I grabbed my trophy of a lifetime and carried it back to the truck to show it off and take some more pictures. I was very happy that my 7mm mag didn’t do too much damage to it. The exit wound was no bigger than a quarter. The bobcat is a female and it probably weighed around 30 pounds or so. I am having a full body mount done on it by Micheal at Nature’s Way Taxidermy.P.S. I never did need those leaves that I was looking for. Brent
just make sure it doesn't turn out like some of these mounts
