Maverick 2013 coyote thread
« on: November 25, 2013, 01:39:22 PM »
Didn't realize till just now that there was a coyote madness contest going so looks like I missed out on it for this year. First pic is a female I shot Friday morning. Smart dog. Took her sweet time coming in and didn't want to come to close. Made around a 250 yard shot with a .222. Went out Sunday afternoon and called in the male. He came in a low spot and winded me. Stopped at around 200 yards and I dropped him with a 22-250. After shooting him saw another one off in the distance. While taking the pic heard it yipping over the hill. Hike over there and called and it came running in. I had my 11 year old nephew with me and he shot the coyote at about 80 yards. It flopped around and I thought it was done but jumped up and dipped into a low spot. Ran over there and couldn't find it. We searched but it was getting dark. Should have put a finisher shot in it when I had the chance but didn't think it needed it. It was his first time coyote hunting and his first shot at one. Sucks we couldn't get a pic but I told him that it's not all about pics. That's one less dog around to chase pheasants and fawns and that's what were out there to do. He can't wait to go again.

I just felt bad that his first one got away because I made a bad decision. I love that old .222 though. Good ol Remington. My dad has shot a lot of yotes with it. If anyone has one they'd like to sell then pm me!

I'll check that out! That kid has really impressed me out hunting. I've been waiting a long time for him to be old enough to go and for him to get a buck and coyote with his first shots just straight blows me away. I missed the first shot I took at my first buck and I didn't get a coyote till I was 14. Missed a few before that too!

love that .222 round as well. my son used one in south Africa, when we shot up the box of ammo I asked the guide if I could have the box to show the kids in my hunter's education classes that most modern ammo maker's put a picture of intended target on the box.

good job on the yotes, gonna get out soon and see if we can't dent the population around here.

Yeah I've got some spots that I'll hold off on hunting till the classic. Right now I'm just hunting ground that's well known to a lot of coyote hunters. Either they're leaving them for the classic too or they can't call worth a crap. I won't make it out today but I'll be out all weekend. I finished a 29 hour shift at work last night so today I'm just going to relax and eat.
