Ruger M77 ?
«
on:
November 06, 2008, 05:44:42 PM »
My camera is Fing up so can not post a pic as of yet but here is my question.
I have a ruger m77 270 it has very nice wood stock with no black tip and no checkered stock. It has a wide grain wood stock and all it has is M77 on the side but with it having the nice stock I can not find it in my book. The serial # is 771-698## Any help would be nice I want to sell it. .

Here is a photo I found. It looks like this but this is a MarkII rifle. This is also listed as a laminate stock not real wood.

Is the Ruger a lefty also? Must be the one you traded the howa 243 for?

The one I have is a RH. Yes it is the one I traded for the Howa. Thought it was a MarkII but looked at it and it does not have MarkII on it.

Is the safety on the tang, middle, or on the side? Looking at the pic I'm guessing it's a MKII. I don't know if the made a Stainless in the original M77.

It is not a stainless I posted that to give idea of the safety. I found out the rifle was made in 1988 running the serial # but the stock has me confused on what it is. But Ruger does not list a wod stock with out the checkered stock or Black tip on the stock. The rifle is in a gloss blueing finish. Mind you I have never owned a ruger so some of the stuff I am posting might be normal for ruger. Plus the safety is in the rear of the rifle under the bolt.

If the rifle has a two position tang safety on top of the stock, it's a M77, if it has a 3 position Mauser type tab safety above the bolt, it's a M77 Mark II. Ruger no longer makes the M77. The M77 Mark II replaced the original model in 1991 when they retooled production and changed the safety design and some other features of the rifle including the bolt face design to allow controlled round feeding, one of my favorite features of this rifle. If your serial number dates to 1988, it's a M77, not a Mark II. That said, you should have the old style tang safety as well. In 2006 Ruger redesigned the M77 yet again, changing the trigger (now adjustable) and the stock design and calling it the M77 Hawkeye. Ruger still lists the M77 Mark II in their catalog in addition to the new M77 Hawkeye.
I've owned both original and Mark II Ruger rifles. They're a good value and a well made rifle, old or new, IMO.

I have not pulled the stock off to look at the trigger yet but the trigger has a set screw on it to what I can see.

You say the New Mark II has an adjustable trigger?

Cat I have that same gun in 30/06. Bought it brand new in 1985 when I was still in HS. They call the stock "sunburst laminate" and it was direct from the factory. This is the tang safety model as well. I payed like 350-375 for it back then, but Ive seen a few at the gun show from 550 to 650, no scopes just the ruger rings included.

Ok that answer my question. I have been searching for three days to figure it out. So it is a factor order rifle then?

Yes, when I bought mine the dealer had other calibers, but he said they were a special run from Ruger. To bad yours wasnt a 25/06 or you'd have it sold.....
