Bethel and Nile Spring Turkey
« on: December 07, 2013, 06:34:02 PM »
Talked to a guy who hunts elk in the Bethel Unit.  He said that he has come across turkey pretty consistently in the Fall.  I got on gohunt and it looks like pretty nice area over there.  I checked out Nile GMU too and it looks pretty good, but it doesn't look like anyone hunts it according to the harvest reports.  Does anyone know why?  I read that there was a pretty good sized wolf pack roaming through there in 2008-2010, but I would think WDFW would have got that under control by now.  Especially with the Oak Creek Wildlife Area and Elk Feeding Stations down in Bethel GMU.  Any info will be appreciated, thanks in advance.

Yakima county turkeys are spread pretty thin, you'll have better luck in kititas county I think.

In Kittitas County I'm thinking I'll go up around Lake Cle Elum.  Since they closed the bridge on one of  the major access points I will be able to hike in and hopefully the birds won't be so pressured by the crowd.  We'll see though, there are tons of people over there.

What about the Nile unit? I can't seem to find any info on the turkey there.  Probably because they're non-existent at this point from getting eaten by wolves, but curious nonetheless.

I definetly will. It is a very large area and I won't have any time to do any scouting before the season starts.  I've got a pretty good area up the Teanaway I hunt, as long as I hit at the right time.  Thanks again for the help.

I have heard of little evidence of any large numbers of wolves in that area. I am sure if there are wolves around they may take a turkey occasionally , Mostly cripples or injured.  I have never heard of wolves being a limiting factor to turkey populations.

Agree that wolves will only get the infirm birds or very young ...

Think NE Washington where 70 to 75% of the harvest happens ... lots of public land and many friendly private land owners.  Just get off the main roads though ...
