Gaia GPS App for iPhone
« on: December 12, 2013, 01:40:31 PM »
Wondering if anyone has experience with this app? I'm just beginning to do the research on it but so far it sounds like it's definitely worth having.

So is there any reason I shouldn't get it? Perhaps there's a better one available that I haven't heard of yet?

I am curious as well, I have the app, but have not used it much.

I think I've decided that all those GPS app's for phones are OK at best. The biggest problem is they suck the life out of the battery on your phone. I use the Hunting GPS Maps app on my iphone and it works well. My hunting buddy has the Trimble Navigator Pro on his iphone and ipad and it works ok. Neither of them work "great" when there's no cell service but they work as long as you cache maps for offline use ahead of time(read--before you're out of service). Both of the 2 I mentioned are $40 a year. The Trimble one you can purchase on a month to month basis which is kinda nice.
That app you posted seems more aimed towards hikers which is nice....the way it keeps track of elevation, tracks you, etc. That's all pretty neat. I use the AllTrails app for that, which is another cool hiking app.

Bobcat, since you asked, send an email to support@gaiagps.com, and we'll send you a code to download Gaia GPS for free. I am Andrew, one of the developers.

We'll also give you a GaiaPro subscription, so you can display the land ownership and other overlays on the topo and aerial maps.

We have been working on getting information like WMAs and GMUs into Gaia this season, but we haven't done Washington specific overlays yet. The public land ownership overlay is nationwide and includes Washington though. You could also point us at map resources you'd like included in Gaia.

pretty cool offer. WMA's and GMU's would be great info to access when scouting. Land ownership is also a great one to have, and would stop me from having to carry a binder in my quad just in case it ever pops up of where I am.

Forgot to mention that they are a great company to work with. I bought the Beta version of their app and they offered to let me buy the regular version and they will refund me the money. Never took them up on the offer but it was a great offen nonetheless

One of the things I do really like, is their compass on the maps page!

OK Bobcat,  you need to play with that app for a few days and then give us a rundown on what you think of it!   Looking for one of these myself.
