Sheep Pneumonia
« on: December 06, 2013, 01:55:04 PM »
Going to be another tragedy in the news soon.   I was watching a group of a couple rams, bunch of ewes and a lamb or two and one of the ewes was coughing her lungs out.   The other sheep gained the hill and this ewe had to keep stopping and coughing her lungs out.   SAD

That sucks, out of all the critters we have to watch around here I tend to enjoy watching them more than others.  :'(

This was Selah Butte.   Inevitable since they cross back and forth.

So far all of the sheep harvested off of Clemans this year have come back as testing clean.  They knew that the sheep in the canyon were still sick, they had nearly 100% lamb mortality this spring from it.

That makes sense why I haven't seen very many lambs.   There were two in this group.   I would love it if mother nature took over and these little punks were immune to it.   Its going to take a survivor in order to get some immunity.

I suppose the good news is she probably didn't survive the night.   5 degrees, 30 mph winds all night.   She didn't have enough air to climb the hill.   She'll be feeding magpies shortly.

Do other states have this problem or is it just a Washington thing?

Other States have it. Transmitted through domestic sheep carrying the disease. They're vaccinated for it but still carry it and transmit it.

There is no vaccine for domestics or wild sheep.  Separation is the only preventive action available.

Dangit. Thanks for the clarification and sorry for the misinformation.

Even if an animal lives through an outbreak foes not give them an immunity to any future outbreaks. It is a very frustrating situation. The ONLY way to stop outbreaks from happening is separation from domestic sheep and goats.

Get the forest service to stop giving out grazing  leases and they might have a chance. the only ones i know of advocating for them to stop this practice is the Muckleshoot Tribe. They actually made headway in the rock creek area as they terminated that lease. I say hold the sheep farmer or forest service liable for the reintroduction of them and maybe it will stop. very sad indeed especially on the heals of the Tieton herd being wiped out!!!
