Heart Sank!!!!!
« on: December 27, 2013, 06:13:34 PM »
I was cleaning out my pick up which I don't drive often and flipped up the back seat ..... :yike: I had left my grandpas Model 94 back there since elk camp and it is littered with surface rust . What is the best way to remove and protect from here. It is drying now.

Start with a paper towel and some hoppes, if any deeper rust you can get some fine steel wool and try that, then oil it up good  :twocents:

Good oil and brass or copper wool, not STEEL and Flitz. That should take care of the rust and not hurt any of the blueing.

Thanks guys, it doesn't appear to have pitted, or gotten in the guts of the action.

Copper cleaning pad wooks the best for rust on a gun, a good quality lube could of avoided the rust. I hate to see things like this, It happens all to often, one time I used my kids 22 rifle at a friends property and when we were done shooting I leaned it up against a tree and forgot all about it. A couple of weeks later we went back there and the gun was still there, probably in worse shape then your gun. We cleaned it up pretty decent, but it's not the same afterwards. Every one makes mistakes.

:yeah: I've used a wool sock and some Kroil to clean up some of my my mistakes before. The worst was the result of a long day in the woods, a long drive home, and falling asleep within minutes of getting home. :bash:
