270 for elk? what bullet?
« on: November 10, 2008, 07:12:00 PM »
well guys its a little late this year but im gonna switch to modern firearm season elk next year. i plan on using my new tikka in 270 and i have a buddie that is gonna load me up 100 rounds (i just need to buy the cases and bullets). so that is enough to get me sighted in and ready for next season.

so what bullet/weight should i be using for elk out of a 270? and i will be hunting the westside.

Any bonded core bullet will do. I shoot the Accubonds 140gr. But the Swift Scirroccos and hornady Interbonds are good to. They are essentially the same bullet. Another good one is the Nosler Partition I think they have a 160gr wieght in that but I'm not sure. If not 150 will work fine. And of course the Barnes X-Bullets are good too almost any wieght is good with those because they don't loose any wieght at all. I really like the looks of the tipped triple shock 130gr. One factory load i would like to try is from federal loaded with the Trophy bonded tip bullet. It is a bear claw bullet with a tip and a boattail. So it seems like a really good bullet to try, not sure you can hand load with it. hope this helps

I shot my bull this year in the Matheny unit with a 140 gr trophy bonded bullet in the Federal high energy package.

One shot to his upper spine, and he was pretty much finished. Its  a great bullet, and I have used the same round on my sheep and mtn goat hunt with great success.

Good luck !

I agree with tracker 130gr TSX. I shoot them out of my 270 WSM. They hit really hard. Took two elk and two deer with them 1 shot each. Both elk dropped like a sack of potato's. 250 yards through both shoulders bullet lodged in-between the skin and meat of opposite shoulder I lost 4 grains of the bullet perfect mushroom!  :) :twocents:

When I hunted with my 270 I used a 140grn partition. With the recent performance of my 7mag accubond I would say go with the 140 accubond. :)

That's some good info, there!!!  Gotta think that 130 tsx would be a helluva choice.

I'm not a reloader, but my 270 WSM really likes the Winchester 140 gr Accubonds. Considering the price of ammunition these days maybe I should start reloading.

cool. i know there are alot of you guy hunt elk with the 270 so im not worried about that one little bit. but bullet choice is a little different. i usaully just hunt deer with the cheapest crap i can find and never have a problem (never get to shoot alot of deer anyway lol)

i shot my deer this year with a barnes x bullet and the damage was insane (blown off jaw completely) though that was 180gr out of a 30-06. i would assume that same bullet in 150gr shooting 200fps faster would be deadly aswell.

thanks again guys.

:)I haved alot of rifles but for some reason I almost always use my 270 for deer/elk/ general use. I shoot the Federal blue box 130 grain. $15.99 a box sometimes on sell for 12.99. shoots well, has killed a bunch of deer and a few elk, couple black bear. I am a careful shot, wont shoot past 300 yards generally, and have killed enough game to be patient. If I think I need a big tough bullet I use a 300 WM.
That budget 130 load has worked real well for me.

well me and my dad both shoot a 270, and recently my brother will be shooting one also.....moving form a 30-06 to a smaller flatter shooting round.

For years my ddad has shot 150 grain ballistic tip rounds for everything, and i have also...me and my dad both have killed alot of things with the bullet, and honestly to say it has done good work for us, but last year i moved to an accubond, and really like it.

From what i here thenew accubond and the new barnes bonded bullet ae where it is at....the accubond of which only comes in a 130 and 140 grain.....

My recommendation for a 270 and elk would be those 2. high ballistic cofficiancy, and a big smack when it meets the target........

We bought my Dad a new 270win last year for his birthday.  Bought him 5 boxes of the Remington rounds loaded with 130gr swift scirocco's, and I sighted it in for him, so he got 4 full boxes of ammo.  So far he has shot it 5 times.  Last years deer and elk both fell to it for him.  This year his 6 point bull, his buck and my niece even used it to kill her cow elk.  All fell to the factory loaded remington 130gr swift scirocco with a single shot in that 270win.
I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.
If I ageed with you, then we'd both be wrong.
