Raffle Permits
« on: January 03, 2014, 10:19:44 AM »
I'm still trying to understand which raffle permit I should apply for (if any).  I've seen a couple threads where a monster bull is taken by a guy who had enough money to 'buy the raffle.'

Since I don't have a lot of money, and don't play lottery odds, is it worth applying for Westside elk?  It says "1 additional bull elk."  Does that mean any Westside unit?  Or just an additional tag in a general season unit?  It's hard enough pulling one bull out of ryderwood or Coweeman, so I'm not sure I need two bull tags for that.

And are the westside elk raffle permits better odds than eastside permits?

My dream is a branch antler Roosevelt with that beautiful dark brown/red color.

Opinions? Insights?

Go here:  http://wdfw.wa.gov/hunting/permits/raffles

You can look at how many tickets were sold and get an idea of your odds. Western elk is definitely better odds than eastern.

Thanks Bobcat. I had no idea that info was right there.  Is the raffle permit good for any Westside Unit, or just the regular muzzleloader units?  Is there only one tag per category awarded? And I guess there is no way to know if rich dudes are buying a thousand tickets, or is it more fair than the Eastside raffle?

Thanks again Bobcat.

Jeez, if I'd posted a question of whether musket caps were better than #11s there would be two pages of replies.  I'm gonna try posting in Elk Hunting and see if anyone is interested.

Thanks again Bobcat.

There is no weapon specific raffle permits. You can hunt in any unit that is open during the general season or permit season from 9/1-12/31.

1 winner for west elk, last years winner only bought 4 or 5 tickets so you always have a chance.  Cannot hunt in unit485, units that are closed to elk hunting and units not opened to branch antlered bull elk hunting.  It's a great tag to draw, good luck!

When I buy raffle tickets, western elk and western deer are the ones I buy. I like going for the ones that have reasonable odds. And I only buy three or four.

What can I say? I don't have the money to compete with the guys who buy thousands of tickets for eastside elk.

how do you know they won't buy thousands of wetside tickets?  There's a whole different category in the book for them to chase the #1 spot for roosies.  Be extremely tough to top those bulls though.

Well, there were 2,060 westside elk tickets sold versus 7,344 for the eastside.  Seems like better odds to me.   :dunno:

You're assuming past odds will be future odds.  Over the years, the eastside raffle went from 7k down to 4k and back to 7k.  You're using the odds of knowing the approximate odds.  :chuckle:  I'm right there with you.  Good luck bobcat.

That variation just changes based on who buys the auction tag for the eastside elk.

I just wish they would make it legal to buy on-line, it was way more convenient.  Used to buy a couple every payday, I just forget when I have to go in the store, plus it always seems busy at the cust service counter.
