Mr. Buddy Hunting Buddy heater won't stay lit
« on: January 07, 2014, 12:06:23 PM »
Anyone else have a problem with their Big Buddy/Hunting Buddy heater shutting off for no apparent reason?
I got 1 for Christmas. It won't stay lit in my garage. I knew they were kinda sensitive to wind but there's no wind in my garage. It will burn for a while, then it just goes out. I can fire it back up and it will go for a shorter time, then quits again. Plenty of propane, no wind, nothing that I can find. I've used it twice since Christmas in my garage and both times it craps out on me.
I should have done my homework on this before putting it on my Christmas list. I thought they were the bee's knees though

 :dunno:

Don't those have a CO sensor? Could be shutting off for that reason.

Are you using the little green bottles or a 5 gallon tank?

I had this problem in the one in my duck boat.
I took apart the orifice and cleaned it out with a wire and compressed air.
It never happened again.

They will also go out if you tip them too far (it's a bit of a problem in a boat)

1-They have a low oxygen sensor but I'm using it in a 2 car garage with a garage door that could use some adjusting.  In other words it's got some gaps and I highly doubt there is actually a low oxygen condition.

2-It lights up easy....no issues there.

3/4-Multiple little green cans. None made a difference.

5-I will probably take it apart and clean but the thing is brand new... I don't know why it would be dirty unless it's assembly debris or something.

I've been on hold with the company's customer service phone for 25:00+minutes as I type this. I think I'm giving up.

They do have a thermstat on them,if there isnt enough room between the back of it and some obstruction it will heat up and turn off.mine works great no problems,But when i first got it i tried using it to close to the wall in my blind and it to kept turning off.now i keep it about 1 foot or more away from everything and no problems.  :twocents:

Mine was new as well.
The sensor in the pilot tube orifice is dirty and making it shut off.
Clean it and you should be fine.

His probably got dust on the sensor at the factory and needs cleaned.
Mine sits in the rain and snow and takes a beating, a little cleaning every season and it works great!

Since it is so new i would return it and get another.
They do work great but can get debris/spiders in the orifice tube and that can cause them to act just like described.
I have one and use it in an18ft travel trailer, works great, your garage would never get to the point that the low oxygen shut off would kick it off.
