Lead shot bb maker
« on: January 09, 2014, 11:18:22 PM »
Thinking of reloading for he shotguns and saw the prices of lead shot is out the roof. Doesn't seem any different in price after cost of supplies than just buying the pre loaded rounds.
But started thinking I can get lead for near nothing from time to time. Or cheap other times. So thought about building a lead shot maker.
Anyone ever do it.
I don't expect perfect roundness from every pellet but would love to tinker around and get into making my own shot. Don't want to by one made already because they cost to much.
Any ideas

There is a few threads on castboolits forum on how to make your own shot
https://www.howlforwildlife.org/take_action  It takes 10 seconds and it’s free. To easy to make an excuse not to make your voice heard!!!!!!

I've owned a Littleton Shot maker. It works and if you have the time and a source of lead, it's not a bad investment.

Thanks for the info.
I would like to play for a bit and try to build my own design but if it comes down to it I would buy the Littleton in a heart beat. Just tight on cash right now.
Also what does the reclaimed shot go for these days?
Has anyone ever tried building there own bb maker

Can you get nozzles for that thing that will make shot bigger than #6?

Reclaimed shot is usually 1/2 the cost of new. The shot drippers can be bought. If a guy could fab his own pan, the rest is easy to procure.
If memory servers, the #6 size was the largest that would work with his design.

I'm guessing that reclaimed would be ok for skeet, i was just thinking bird hunting, I think #6 are too light for pheasant... Ok for everything else...

i own a littleton and have built my own shot dropper (full custom fab). my advice would be buy a littleton.  but if a guy were bent on building his own building the pan and drip lip wouldnt be all that hard, polishing the drip lip might be trouble some as it needs to be mirror smooth.  when i build mine i had full access to a full metal shop. drilling out the hex bolts for the drippers was problematic and required specialized drill bits and a milling machine. I use to drop a lot of shot its not hard but time intensive

pm me if you more specifics

i shoot close to 1000 shotshells every month (trap shooting) honestly with the time and effort involved in dropping shot youd be money ahead to just buy reclaimed shot
