Started Trapping Today!
« on: January 11, 2014, 06:26:27 PM »
I put out some colony sets, and a few mink sets today before the Seahawk game. Had  a lot of fun just figuring out what I was doing.
I was wondering if anyone has built any beaver, otter swim through traps with gravity doors? Like a big colony rat trap.

There are a few different threads on that stuff in the Trappers thread. Take a look around in there and see what you can find. Me and the Lady may start trapping this year but with things going how they are we really dont know if we will have the time. We got our trappers class done this year though, was quite entertaining. Goodluck to you and your new hobby and keep us posted on how everything goes.

Yes on the gravity doors for beaver, not so good for otter. Built like a colony trap I think you will miss a few beaver and most otter. You will need some kind of frame for the trap and doors though or they will wreck the trap and get out.

Here is a picture of what I think your looking for, they do work but seem to work better in dirty water conditions. The one pictured is 14 x 14 x 48 with a full frame.
 Good luck.

Is there some kind of trigger with that trap, or just free swinging doors?

gravity set up. so no trigger no springs. I'm guessing you were thinking of a guillotine style door.

No, that's what I was looking for. I think I can build a few of these fairly cheap. After this season I'll build some with triggers, springs, and maybe some guillotine like yours.
Did you build your traps or buy them?

The trap design above doesn't have a trigger system but it will catch more beaver w/ one. Hump has a neat trigger on his. Good Luck

use 1/4 in rod for the frame and doors to keep the beaver from bending them.
