ATV/UTV on-road insurance???
« on: January 22, 2014, 11:26:39 AM »
Now that atv/utv's can be made street legal in WA ST, I have found that my current carrier will only cover it for off-road use. Wondering if anyone has a suggested carrier who they are insured with that they can recommend that will insure for both on & off road use???

Who is your current carrier?

I sell insurance and would be happy to investigate with a couple of carriers to see what their stance is on the issue.

I would imagine it is similar to insuring an enduro motorcycle, but I haven't had anyone specifically request coverage in WA.  In Idaho we have dealt with it, but not in the last few months.

Hey whacker1, could I ask a favor? My current insurance carrier just informed me that they are no longer insuring boats as of 1 March. Suggestions? Thanks in advance. fishingfool :dunno: :hello:

ghosthunter you are correct. Chelan county and city of East Wenatchee have passed ordinances to allow them on their respective roads with posted speed limits of 35mph or less. Soon douglas county will pass one too.

whacker,. I currently have it under progressive, but they will not cover it on street. Allstate said no. I have found that Dairyland will cover it for both....at a very high rate.  Seems kind of excessive for the very limited time I would use it on pavement.
THX for the info :hello:

You don not need insurance on any ATV/ORV in Washington, period.

I have Foremost insurance, because I've got a butt-load of money in 2 of them and I don't want to be without, if one or both gets stolen. I pay $45 a month for mine.

If you are going to "legally ride on paved roads" you must have insurance comparable to what autos have to have. (It is Written into the law that was passed HB1632)

Jingles, I have already converted my Commander to be street legal, Temp. license plate and all required equip.

You are 100 % wrong my friend. You do not need insurance on them. I just left a meeting with one of the ATV guys that helped write HB1632 and insurance IS NOT REQUIRED. Our county commissioner was there, retired from WSP and the Republic Chief of Police and insurance was brought up, no insurance needed, period.

I don't know who told you, you needed it, but they are wrong.

OK, I was wrong.  I went back and re-read the bill summary.  I thought it had an insurance requirement, but no in looking at it, I don't see it there.  I am not sure if it was in a proposed version and removed or if I just imagined it.

Either way, below is the link to the bill summary.
