Upland scatter guns and other tools of the trade
« on: January 25, 2014, 05:12:08 PM »
Ok so we have been posting our keep from the season. How about the tools of the trade. Guns, vests, dogs, etc!

Definitely not the prettiest gun out there but I shoot well with this gun. It fits me like a glove and is well balanced. It was my wife's grandfathers shotgun so I take some pride hunting with it.

Well, it's not a gun, vest or dog but definitely a "tool of the trade" and well deserved after chasing those red legged devils all day.

The best tool a upland hunter can find, a GOOD bird dog.  You can kill birds with any shotgun if you can find them.

Bernardelli Elios copy of a Churchill XXV 12 ga., 25" barrels, 5 lb. 15 oz. and the correct number of triggers.

After the first shot the rest are just noise.

My two kids have  been my favorite hunting neccesity this year. We flushed some grouse and I missed of coarse. My son said "Daddy I think you need to practice more" after reflecting on the day while eating diner. Been a fun year for me. Not a lot for the freezer but plenty of memories.

I mainly take my Marlin 90 16ga for long walks while looking for birds, shells, rocks, sheds and what ever else I can find to prove to my wife that I actually went hunting because even if I get a shot I rarely hit anything.

I hope to add a hunting dog to my hunting arsenal next season. We will see.

Naches I love the 31s, ball bearing shell shukers, there is not a smoother pump in existence.  I own a 16ga. Been looking for a 31L in 16ga for a while as my chukar gun.

Good whiskey sounds good anytime and after chukar hunting there is no better excuse.

joe_dumy, Thank you for that GREAT picture of your kids on the hunting/picnic break. I think you have discovered the true essence of the sport; sure a full game bag is nice, but as you have discovered, the true meaning lies elsewhere.

BTW, nice shotgun; I too love the 16 ga. I own three; including a Remington 31L.

As far as I know it is a melanistic (black phase) pheasant.  I shot it in MT a long way from any house or farm yard so I'm pretty sure it was a wild bird not and escapie.

Love the Model 90, it is on my short list of gotta have 16ga shotguns.
After the first shot the rest are just noise.

Joe,

Great picture of the kids. And yes, I could use more practice myself! I hate when I let my dog down by missing.

Remington 1100... Beautiful as it was when it came out of the box 30+ yrs ago. Used three times to shoot skeet before I got my hands on it and started putting it to work!

Thanks for the comments on the kids. We can do 5 to 7 miles of old logging roads now with no whining. Not to bad for 5 and 6 years old. Get a little nervous about cougars here and there. But I cant go without them without a big fit now. And my son is convinced he take at least one of them out with his red rider.  So we stay close and are pretty noisy.

T-Bone if you every want to get rid of that 31L 16 ga please consider me.

Bracer I feel like we need to make up for that trip someday to your dog. 16 shot and two quail. He deserves better. I had a rock in my shoe and it was throwing me off. Not sure what your problem was.

A couple of my chukar guns, an Uggie and an extinct maker, (Jesus Irazabala).

My turkey gun, a super-full choked Spanish double without any makers mark, proofed in 1929.  This bird was a real limb hanger and was amazingly tender/juicy.

My favorite, a 20 gauge LC Smith 2E from 1909:

Another nice one, a 1907 20 gauge LC Smith:

How about a new gun, this is a 1948 Elsie:

Dinged up chukar gun...still kills them dead.  Beretta 686 onyx. I have been using it since 1989. The vest is also showing some wear.

Nice pics Lee.  A dinged up chukar gun is what makes hunting fun.  I will admit I put a few dings on mine this year.  My beretta is not pretty but gets the job done. Also, the dog looks happy!!

There is something about the scent of birds to those bearded dogs that's like "SPEED" to them.  They can be dead tired or hurting at the end of the day and they hit bird scent on the way back to the truck and they are just as wound up as the first bird of the day.

My old Trooper has artheritic hips but can't be left home, you'd never know it to see him in the field, he is " balls to the wall" the whole time and in the evening I have to lift him on to the couch and he cries everything he tries to move but don't try and leave him home.  I'm doing more duck hunting this year and in the future as the impact isn't quite as bad.
After the first shot the rest are just noise.

Make mine a Minaska

Nice pictures guy and some real nice SXS. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one that shoots them. I have only three of them but if I was younger, I'd have a bakers dozen of them. I wish I took some photo's of them with my dogs out in the field like the ones here.

Here are my two upland guns: a 1920's or 30's 6lb Masquelier (French) 16ga hammer gun and a 1902 Lefever G grade ejector 12ga two barrel set that I traded for last year and that I just had re-case colored.  I would love to add a matching 16 Lefever and a Husqvarna 16 hammer gun at some point.

My Franchi Veloce 20 ga and my English Setter. Sadly my setter may have seen his last days hunting. He injured himself last year and then ended up lame after his recuperation. He still wants to get out, so maybe I'll put him on some short trips this year. We sure had some great days together in the field.

That sucks about your setter.  Nice looking dog.  Mine will be five this year, and I feel like I hit the doggy jackpot.  Just a wonderful dog in every way.  Hope you can get another one at some point.

Thanks!  I can't afford closet queens, and life is too short anyway, so I use them as much as I can.  They do talk.  They talk to me a lot.  They say, "Hey you!  Take me out, take me out!!" :tung:
