Took the dog shooting with me, this is where she ended up!
« on: January 26, 2014, 07:24:58 PM »
I took my dog Pepper (Wirehaired Pointing Griffon) out shooting with me today. I planned on having her hang out in the truck while she's getting used to the gun shots. This is where she ended up. :chuckle:

The gunshots don't seem to bug her at all. The down side is that she makes it a little tough to make a good shot. At least that was the excuse I gave the guy I went out with. :chuckle:

She looks scared and seeking security from her alpha.

I don't even take a 10 yr old bird dog shooting with the high power stuff.  It hurts their ears even if they don't cower under the truck or run off.

having her hang out in the truck "getting used to the shots" isn't how you introduce a gun either.

Oh and get a shooting mat  :chuckle:

She's on a 50' cord and was free to roam and this was about 2 hours into the day. She spent a while chasing birds at the front of the truck, a little time sleeping inside, she played with her toys for a while, then she ended up between my legs sleeping. She woke up when my buddy got up to take the picture. Most of the day was spent with 22s .That's what I used to introduce her to gun shots. The larger rifles came out as we were leaving and only for about 10 shots.

What's that you folks are shooting?
They're both Savages that I put together and then sold to my buddy. I'm behind a 300 WSM, the black stock is on a 6.5x47 Lapua.

gotcha

usually when a dog is between your legs it's not a good thing for their confidence building.  We don't know much of anything from a picture other than the dog is between your legs and in pretty close proximity to high power rifles going off.

Imagine turning your hearing up a few notches then pulling the trigger on a rifle w/o protection, it's going to be unpleasant.
If you got to wear hearing protection (or should be rather), then the dog doesn't belong there.

That's why I thought it was so funny that she camped out there. The first few times she came out with me and my son I would tie her up 25 yards back from the shooting with the 22s. I use the same logic that if it's loud to me, then it's deafening to her. This is the first time that she decided to hang out right there with me. She must have been pretty tired.

She has this funny habit of always sleeping on my feet. Any time I sit on the couch or on the bed, she always needs to sit right on my feet. Maybe I should get a shooting mat for her to sleep on so that she stays out of the way. :chuckle:
