Do all Quads need a title in Washington?
« on: April 13, 2014, 09:11:51 AM »
I was going to put a couple of quads I've had for years up on craigslist this morning to clear out some space.  While looking at the other listings, I see a lot of them stating "title in hand".  So I went and checked out the dol site and it looks like quads need titles?

I believe one was part of a horse trade (seriously) and the other was partial payment for some construction work.  A couple family friends gave them to me for the kids to ride around in the pasture.

I've never owned any other atv's or motorcycles and these never left my property, so I've never even bought the tags or tabs that I see are required.

I'm going to call the DOL tomorrow to figure out how I can sell these quads.

Is there a cutoff age for the title requirement?
Anybody been through the process?  From the DOL website, it looks like it could take 10 weeks!

A title is required if you go to license it.  If you just want it to ride around the pasture or property no title is required.  If you don't have a title, it usually pulls up red flags as many come across as "hot".  Not always the case, but usually my first thought if there is no title.
Cut em!

I suppose it makes sense to document the chain of ownership for theft purposes. I just never considered the state would issue titles for quads.  Not high value items but I'd be really pissed if I find out I've had quads that were stolen in my garage for the last 10 years or so.

You should be able to apply for lost title through DOL. It will require whoever is titled as legal owner to sign off though. The risk is if sometime in the past they were stolen you could be out a couple quads

I've dealt with it, had to get a paper from dol releasing interest signed and notorized from the last titled owner, if you can't, you wait 6 weeks (might be 4) and apply to get it licensed only, which involves a wsp inspection, then a period of 3 years where you don't have a title, but can license it for use. After 3 years, you can apply for and receive a title.

If you know the last title holders, your best bet is to get them to fill out the release of interest or fole for lost title, which still takes 6-10 weeks.

Thanks, that sounds like a hassle but I guess I'll have to make some calls and see if I can track down the last people that had a title for these things.  I certainly don't want to keep them another 3 years!

Definately a hassle. Just to get ORV tags for it is out of the question until you get the process going. Thats a hard sale to someone.

Your best bet is to find an oregon buyer. They don't need titles down there, and are more apt to buy em as is, or someone who wamts them for personal property use.
Tough situation regardless.

G ood luck
