nothing beats a day fishing in 85F clear blue skies whales breaching all around...even if all you catch is one fish.  the waters were clear to 100ft and the flying fish were going crazy.  it weighted in at 6.3lbs and fed my wife and I for 4 days.  that's what I call paradise.  Molokai this time of year is SWEEET.

Two weeks and we are on our way to the Yucatan, hopefully there will be some fish around for us to use our kitchenette.

Have you fished there before? I got blew off the water 5 days straight. I wish I would of went inland and fished the flats. Have fun.

First time down there.  We are going out to Isla Mujeres.  We're planning one bluewater trip but will mostly be out in a kayak.

Good job....I got three more months before I head off to Florida Keys for my annual mahi-mahi slabs...  And then 7 months til LaPaz for mahi-mahi bulls...   Super fun stuff on the blue water....

We were down by La Paz a few years back and had a great time fishing for mahi mahi and roosterfish. I tried out of a kayak a couple times but was not succesful. I did catch a 58# bull dorado out of a panga on gear and a couple bonito on my fly rod though. Awesome time for sure. Tired really hard a couple times for mahi mahi on the fly but no go. The roosters are fun....fish with sardinas around the moored sportfisherman boats once they come in and dump bait at the end of their day. The roosters congregate to eat the half dead sardinas.
Good stuff.
I thought in Mexico they referred to mahi as dorado.

You are going to love it. Island of the naked ladies is what that stands for. Rent a golf cart and cruise around. Check out the turtle sanctuary. if you get a chance head to Cozumel and do some scuba diving. You can rent gear and kayaks in Cancun and site cast for bones In the shallows.

mahi mahi are commonly called dorado...mahi mahi means strong in Hawaiian as they are a tough fighting fish for their size.  there is no license no limit out in the islands so the numbers and sizes have diminished greatly.  the state has very little control over their fishing or at least are unwilling to control it.  in the northern Hawaiian island chain...there are better numbers and sizes and a permit is required to fish.  but guess who gets the permits...grease the palms of the politicians and the permits are yours.  time to hunt the humpback whales...5000 to 8000 spend winter in the channel off Molokai-Lanai-Maui.

I don't have any experience or knowledge of fishing in Hawaii, so for future reference, please explain this a bit more.  Are fishing licenses not required in Hawaii??

  the short answer is if you are going to go deep sea fishing no license is required for that recreational purpose if you catch and keep it yourself...also no limit.  there are licenses depending on what specifically you want to do on a commercial basis.  but even as a resident you don't need a fishing license for recreational purposes.  so catch on

Mahi-mahi/dorado/dolphinfish is one of my favorites for ceviche.  I got spoiled on one trip (working) off the coast of Costa Rica, I would fish until midnight or later every night and haul in fish until my back cramped up.

I think dorado and their square heads contribute a little bit to the fight

Caught a 20# in Mexico this past  Christmas great fun to catch. We also caught some Tuna which was also a lot of fun. I agree on the Cevichi the deck hand made us some fresh on the boat while we were fishing and it was super good!!!!
