fishing around rockaway beach or in mid-late august?
« on: February 12, 2014, 04:27:18 PM »
So we just rented a house in rockaway beach for a week in mid august, the 15th-22nd.

looking around on the web it seems there are a few charters running out of tillamook bay, and some surf fishing opportunities, I will have one day to devote to fishing. I have never surf fished before, but I think I have the rods and reels to get it done available to me.

My other thought was to go out for a bottomfishing trip, one charter service offers a light tackle 6 hour bottom fishing trip, and a 8 hour deep water lingcod trip. I have never fished the ocean for anything but salmon, and would love to catch something that I cant catch on the columbia river or close to home.

if you had a day to devote and about 200$ to spend, what would you do? is the bottomfishing good in august? what about the surf fishing?

I used to stay at Rockaway all the time.  The surf perch fishing off of the beach is really good, You can catch lingcod and bottom fish off of the jetty and Lake Litetil is one of the best bass lakes on the Oregon Coast.  The bottom fishing is really good

Nehalem and tillamook bay are famous for big kings. Nehalem gets a decent early run of pigs. If interested search Russ morrow. He is one of the best on nehalem.

I'd do the ling thing but I also would rather eat lingcod than seabass. Either one would be fun. Best thing about fishing in the ocean is you never know whats coming up on the end of your line.
Fish hard, hunt harder!

so I may take my the kid out as well, he will be 10, and has a short attention span, if I take him my thoughts are to do the 6 hour light tackle trip, thinking it will be more action and be a better time. my other thought is maybe just take him crabbing and wait till he is older before I take him on a charter.

Bottom fishing would be a good bet.  They will get you into fish.  Also, do you know if you get sea sick?  I went on a tuna charter last year with some people from eastern Washington who had never been on the ocean.  I can't imagine what it would be like to puke for 12 hours straight....

The Rockaway beach area has a lot of opportunities around that time of year, bottom fish, salmon, surf peach. Its a good place to take kids out too.
