Piston versus gas, what's better?

Just looking for opinions on which ar option is better. Gas or piston system?

Everything I find online has mixed reviews on both.

My gun will have an 18" barrel if that manners and will be free floating. Not to worried about extra cost because I'm building it little by little.

Piston AR's are a solution looking for a problem IMHO.

I think a properly maintained and headspaced impingement AR/M16/M4 is reliable in any situation.

Agreed, some have even caused problems with bolt carrier tilting and wearing the upper receiver.

The rifles we used in the military fired countless rounds, and were abused relentlessly.  Sand, dirt, clay, mud, you name it.  Add to that the nastyness that comes with using blanks for training....  Never once saw a single issue caused by the gas system being dirty, clogged, damaged, or whatever else people say can happen.

My son just bought a Ruger SR762 and he is sending back to the factory for repairs. 

It's short stroking and the big pin that secures the gas piston and setting knob came out twice.   Told him to buy an M1A, (Springfield Armory INC) or an LRB M14 clone.

Yep strait gas is the best bet. Nothing wrong with it so don't fix it The only reason I could see them as being better is to run them with a suppressor. Now there is adjustable gas blocks so you can tune the gas guns
