220 Swift loads.
« on: November 18, 2008, 07:43:31 AM »
I just got one of these my first one ever. Trying to find out how hard you guts push them with their bad rap. Im thinking 55gr Vmax at about 3600, to begin working up with. Any suggestions?

Sage,  a 55 grain V-max at 3600 is slower than I push them out of my 22-250.  You bought the Swift for a reason - run it hard!  I would probably stop at anything over 3800 that shot really well.  We have had the best luck (accuracy wise) pushing them at 4000+.  The V-max will hold up under these conditions.  I would probably start with Varget or another extreme powder for obvious reasons.  Good Luck!

jj, that is just going to be my starting point, this gun is used,  so I want to see how accuracy is to begin with. Ive seen a few published loads pushing almost 4100, but Im not sure if thats a wise spot to be running in. Ill try to get some loaded up this week for abit of testing.Ill let you know how it goes.

220 swift, you lucky dog you. Ive been wanting a 220 swift for years. I buddy of mine has a custom in the 220, shooting the 55 V-max at about 4200 fps and its a tack driver for sure. good luck.

Hey you probably bought the 220 swift for the velocity, pump it up and the hell with any possible throat erosion and etc. It's part of the cost of owning a high velocity rifle. You probably won't wear it out for years anyway.

Thanks guys. Gives me a place to start. Deaddog, my wife actually bought this for me. Its a Ruger M77 tang safety with the med heavy barrel. No scope, so I mounted a Nikon I have, now just need to find time to do some range work. Last weekend the whole family was down with the flu, or Id have been out yotin' this weekend I have to help some friends get their garage done.
