Dip netting for Smelt
« on: February 23, 2014, 08:36:34 AM »
My son and I went to the Cowlitz River down by Castle Rock to dip net for smelt, Saturday 2/22.

Lots of people and no fish.  We watched others dipping their nets off and on for several hours and nothing.

IIRC February was usually the peak...?

River conditions have not been the best: extreme low/cold to blown out brown. But I would think if the run was gonna be big there might have been more around already... :dunno:

This year may not be a too good for smelt. Remember the dipping has been closed for sometime because of no smelt. It'll take time.

And according to what the WDFW released, they were opening it more to monitor the population than because they were necessarily expecting a lot of smelt.
