For the PC crowd, I raised 2 children in my house and luckily they know the difference.

Don't sweat it HuntBoy.

Ignorance precludes it, which is seemingly more than enough.

I didn't blow up.

Just a pet peeve I guess, since I had to go through helping a fellow EMT, after he went to a call for a 3 yr old that got shot in the face by her brother, who got up to the top shelf of a closet, to play with daddy's new toy.

I don't care how you raise your kids, as gun owners we should all speak the same language when we know children are reading our stuff of listening to what we say.

Not PC at all. just plain common sense.

If you taught your kids not to play with guns, don't call them toys---that's what they play with.

So because you are an EMT you feel it's your duty to tell people what to do and what to say?

No,

because I have witnessed the trauma of the effects on the family, the police officers, and EMS people, when they have to deal with a 3 yr old with a hole blown through her face, that could have been avoided by her father being responsible and thinking about what he was doing.

I'm not trying to preach to anyone, just trying to get you to think about what you are saying and how it affects others.

We all draw our conclusions when a tragedy happens, but what were we doing before it happened?
Might not have been in our town, but were we communicating with someone there?
If we all are calling firearms, guns, or weapons, instead of " toys", we are all doing a little bit to help stop the senseless loss of our children. May not seem like much, but maybe it is.

I was in a sporting goods store, and noticed they had lead ammo stocked along with the steel shot, in the waterfowl gear section.
A guy was picking out the lead shells to hunt ducks with, because they were the cheapest.  I reminded him that lead is illegal to use. He changed his purchase to steel shot, and thanked me.

I spoke to the dep't manager about it. His said he he needed shelf space.
I pointed out that we are all inter-connected in the hunting sport. If he is putting lead in the waterfowl area, he is contributing to a new hunter possibly using the wrong shot and getting in trouble.
Next time I was in there, no lead in the waterfowl section.

I in now way excuse personal responsibility in any thing we do. We need to know and follow all the rules and hunt legally, and hopefully ethically. I don't criticize anyone's ethics, because we all have our own idea as to what is ethical and what is not.

I just would like to bring to the forefront  something that most people maybe have never thought of. Maybe it will save a life or some heart ache for someone close to us.
It's not true that I am good for nothing---I can be used as a bad example!!

Savage 10fcp-sr, haven't had it to the range yet. But hopefully soon.

My newest toy

It's not a frickin TOY. It is a rifle.

Before you go all-- I know the difference blah blah blah

Too damn many kids are dying because there parents or relatives describe them as TOYS.

You are living in a dream if you truly feel your above comment isn't PC.
Life happens, and  regardless how you describe an inanimate object, life will continue to happen.
Education is the key to success in life, and even then, those that are stupid will on occasion take out the educated.

Just call it an adult toy!  Shouldn't be any confusion there.   :chuckle:

Fishncliff, I understand what you're getting at and understand the trauma of the situation you were involved in. But you need to also regain some perspective in your life. Were I talking to my students in a hunter education class, no, it's never a toy. Where I talking to my child or any other kid, no, it's never a toy. But, on a hunting forum and referring to a gun as a new toy, what do you think is going to happen? Do you think the OP will forget that it's a real gun and accidentally shoot someone? Do you think a child will read this post and go out and find a real gun and shoot someone? I suggest that the trauma of the situation you were involved in has made you overly sensitive and that a hunter referring to a gun as a "new toy" on a hunting forum has no inherent dangers whatsoever. Kids who are accidentally shot are usually A. the child of an idiot, or B. visiting the child of an idiot, or C. a gangster or gangster wannabe.

By the way, that's an awesome new rifle.

Gee hmm,

Do you think a child will read this post and go out and find a real gun and shoot someone?

Just hearing the word TOY caused a 5 yr old to seek out that toy and play with it.
Reading it on here may have the same effect.

Yeh, I may be a little sensitive, but I'm not arrogant and think it won't happen to me cause I am a hunter or gun owner.,  and I don't judge people as what they may or may not be.

I look at cause and effect.

If you know what causes a problem, and the effects of it,

why not try to take steps to see that those instances are greatly reduced or eliminated.

Seems more logical than puffing up yor chest and saying  stuff like " Ignorance precludes it, which is seemingly more than enough", or " Stop being PC.

But to each their own I guess.
We will see who says what, when the next incident happens.

Fishncliff, so who do we blame when a family never references a gun as a toy and their child kills someone with one? How about the parents for not educating their children about guns? Well?

To blame a single post on the internet with possibly causing an accident is a bit too simplistic don't ya think?

Kids occasionally do really stupid stuff, no matter what you teach them, or say in front of them. I would not think for a second to blame a post on the internet as potentially reducing the safety and well being of youth in general.

A guy drops a chunk of change on a high end purchase of any kind will often refer to it as his new "toy" as you well know. If it was a car would you complain? Heck, the kids may grow up and drive recklessly and injure or kill someone. Same concern?

Yes we blame the gun owner for not being responsible.

To blame a single post on the internet with possibly causing an accident is a bit too simplistic don't ya think?

Didn't blame a post. I simply said--stop using this term , for this reason.

A guy drops a chunk of change on a high end purchase of any kind will often refer to it as his new "toy" as you well know. If it was a car would you complain? Heck, the kids may grow up and drive recklessly and injure or kill someone. Same concern?

Yep. We had this post on H/W asking for people to slow down, http://hunting-washington.com/smf/index.php/topic,147316.0.html.

Didn't see anyone on there bloviating about how they know how to drive blah blah blah.

Wonder why that is.
