ultra newb to ARs - what grain bullet out of 1:9 barrel?
« on: February 27, 2014, 09:14:05 PM »
I bought my first AR a couple months ago..... ordered some accessories and will get it all put together here shortly.

QUESTION:   What grain bullets should I be trying to work with in a 1:9 twist barrel?

I want to plink some but use it on coyotes, so I want to try a few good coyote bullets - not just military surplus stuff.

I don't reload, and I'm not a fan of premium ammo (Ok , I'm cheap).

Thanks a bunch.

With that twist rate you are better off shooting the heavier bullets.  I have the same twist rate in mine and i shoot 68 gr match hollow points.

For plinking you can shoot whatever.  But huntingwise youll get better results with the heavier stuff

yup, 1:9 should handle anything (cheap  ) for plinking, but you will want to be testing some heavier grains for hunting. That twist rate should be able to handle it all though.

60 grainers shoot great in mine, but 55 grainers are plentiful and cheap.  I use mostly 55 grain bullets.  Plenty accurate for most purposes.

Negative ghost rider.......1:9 will not handle anything.  I am by no means an AR whiz but I do have an AR with an 18" barrel 1:9 twist.  I took the above advise and wasted money.  My 1:9 will not stabilize 75 grain bullets.  It will however stabilize 50, 55 and  62 grain bullets.  It like the 55 grain the best and will hold sub 1/2 inch groups at 100 yards, literally stacking bullets on top of each other.  The 75 grain Hornady V-max Match ammo will barely hold 4" groups at 100 yards.

If you don't believe me....I have 200 rounds of Hornady Match 75 grain ammo for sale. :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

Stick with 55 grain and you can't go wrong.  They will destroy anything you will be shooting with an AR and are readily available.

Guys I know that demand good long-range accuracy, like the 69 grain Sierras.  Being the animal that I am, I shoot the 55's.  :chuckle: "Minute of Coyote Accuracy" is good enough for me!

I didn't think that hornady made vmax in 75 grain? I could be incorrect though, sorry for supplying bad info. And yeah, how much you looking for? my 1:7 has a strict 75gr diet... and is hungry!

That could be your rifle as much as the twist rate. Loads of guys shoot 75s out of a 1:9 with great results.
