Which would you buy?
« on: March 05, 2014, 05:35:07 PM »
So I just purchased my first AR-15 last week (Windham Weaponry MPC $729.99), and I am now looking to purchase 1000 rounds of .223 to go shooting.

So my question is: For trianing/plinking/messing around would you recommend purchasing Wolf Poly or Wolf Gold?

The poly is obviously the standard steel case russian ammo, and the gold is brass cased with a FMJ lead core bullet (not bimetal).

I found the Wolf Gold for $339.99/1000rds and the Poly for $287.00/1000rds. (Difference roughly ~$55.00)

The reason I am asking is because I found this article: http://www.luckygunner.com/labs/brass-vs-steel-cased-ammo/

Essentially, since a new barrel and components kit costs roughly $250.00 (even checked windhams website), would you guys just shoot steel case ammo for thousands of rounds and just purchase a new barrel kit with the money saved by shooting the cheaper ammo? Obviously the steel cased ammo barrel would need to be re-barreled far sooner than the brass based ammo barrel. More than likely would replace the extractor also if not earlier.

After 5000 rounds, the barrel kit has paid for itself, and I'm just trying to make sure my though process isn't overlooking anything. For serious use, I'm gonna stock up on XM193, but I'm just wanting some input for target rounds. I'm planning on shooting a good amount through this rifle.

Thanks!

Thanks for the input!. I'd heard that the Wolf Gold brass is really soft, and thus is usually only good for 3 reloads, but maybe someone can comment on that also.

I like PMC. Shoots reliably and has good brass. Can also usually get fairly cheap. 1000 rounds are about 400$ now. It's clean shooting and made in Korea. Sometimes I can get federal cheap too. :dunno:

"HOYT" why would you even consider shooting something else?

Wolf is Ok in a pinch, but PMC is the stuff.

Love mine but a warning for you...The first time I took my windham out shot about 15 rounds and my mag release fell off mag dropped to the ground,I found the spring, shaft, plate and button took it all home and had to take a hammer and swedge the shaft a little more in the plate to get it to hold better. It just slides over the plate and is not swedged enough to hold real good.  :twocents: I reload for mine and use 69 grain it loves them.

Thanks for all the input guys. I just found that PSA has IMI xm193i for .38 cents a round shipped, so my choice got a heck of a lot easier!

I'll watch for anything with the mag release when I take it out to the range

I wish the Black Hills blue box stuff was still available. I still have ~350rds and it was some of the best shooting bulk ammo you could find. I shot a few bug holes with a factory Ruger and all my other guns shoot it well. I wish I had bought a few thousand rounds of the stuff when you could.
