Where to get a computer reflashed?
« on: March 10, 2014, 05:53:59 PM »
I am swapping from auto to five speed into a blazer. In order to not have a bunch of check engine codes I need to have my computer reflashed. Where would I go? I have heard that dealerships would do this. Anybody do this before? Cost?

Never heard of this, but I'm sure a private mechanic shop that specializes in GM vehicles could do it.  Maybe a 4x4 forum would be a better place to ask.... :dunno:
If it was easy, everybody would be doing it.

When Bernie Madoff did it, it's called a "Ponzi Scheme"
When Government does it, it's called "Social Security"

Depending on the year I'd be fairly 99.9% confident you're going to need more than just a flash. Flash/reflash == software update. You'd likely need the ECM that fits the vehicle that the transmission comes out of along with wiring harnesses for speed sensors, neutral safety switch, etc.

You may be able to do something with an aftermarket programmer. I don't know anything about them.

I was going to suggest the same thing, but I'm good at the cosmetic stuff, but I'm no mechanic!

I was looking at this thread on a s10 forum. Later he says that a reflash doesn't fix it.

I am assuming that the five speed you have was offered in that vehicle for that year. If it was and the wiring harness is correct then you can do one of two things either call a custom speed shop (Arizona Speed and Custom) and have them build you a custom calibration or if the vehicle was built with all those options then you can find a VIN with all the same option you can program it with that calibration.

I hate the internet!!! I am getting mixed answers on whether or not flashing fixes the problems or not. Coach, this is all just hypothetical, my bud has a transmission that he is willing to sell for cheap. The only down side is the electrical side of it. But I still think I am gonna do it.

YOU hate the internet--try being 68 years old!  The only vehicle I changed from auto to stick, was my '55 Chevy, and there were no computers in those days!  :chuckle: Some say that a big solar flare will fry all the computers and throw us back to the Stone Age.  Heck, I was born and raised in the Stone Age!

Actually, the internet has made a lot of things better.  When I was a kid, you had to put on a suit and tie to go to a stockbroker to buy and sell stocks.  Now I do it all on the internet in my pajamas!
