Public land hiking in blues by kennewick? This time of year.

I was looking for a place in the woods, near the base of the blues to go hiking.  In two weeks ill be over in Kennewick for a class, and would like to kill the late afternoon poking around the woods.  I have givin out helpful hints to people on certain topics so I thought I'd throw this out.  PM's would be great, thanks.

I'm not sure when they open the roads in the foothills back up. Maybe someone from WW can chime in there. As your subject says, to find somewhere to hike for an afternoon it would have to be on public land (i.e. National Forest). I'm not sure you can get there unless they've openned the primative roads.

Will you have access to a 4x4?

An option closer to town would be to hike around Bennington Lake or the Rooks park area. Its not really "forested", but you can find some isolated places to poke around and kill an afternoon. Good chance of seeing some deer.

Or, go into Oregon; you might be able to get to Tiger Canyon on Mill Creek. Also, maybe the South Fork of the Walla Walla river trail on the other side of Milton-Freewater. I just don't know how long they keep those roads closed.  Many of those roads will have snowpack issues at the higher elevations.

If you don't want to leave Kennewick and just want a good hike with stellar views, the Badger Mountain trails are awesome. You likely won't see much, if any, wildlife; but the hike is a lot of fun, a good workout, on well-maintained trails, and there are several trail options to the top.

On another note if you have a desire to walk a bombed out war zone you can tour our mall. Good chance you will see deer there to.

Thanks guys, I'm sure you know I'm really after a place to try to find some bone laying around.  I know how sensitive those area's are to people and the animals but I'm only in the area for a few days.  I will check it out.

That chuckle is giving you away!!!  But hey, I've searched enough to know a guy can't cover every square inch, of course on the westside it's faaarrr much more difficult to find em! Not that I'm from the westside!!

you may have a good chance of finding some deer bone around Bennington Lake and over to Rooks Park. There is no shortage of deer there, for sure. Explore the swampy area above the diversion dam at Rooks park and the fringes of the fields where the deer go out to feed. Bennington Lake: go to the far side from the parking lot and check out some of the brushy draws. I would venture to say that most people in these areas don't get too far off the beaten or maintained path.

The wolves liked this area enough to come down and explore it a couple of years ago.

If you drive up Mill Creek, you might find some spots with feel free to hunt signs (5 mile bridge and Scenic Loop area?). Hard to say....
