Big Game Hunting Rigs
« on: March 17, 2014, 03:22:43 PM »
I am fortunate to have a Tahoe and a pickup so I never really have to choose. But if you could only have one vehicle what would it be? Or just tell us what is your ideal street legal machine to get you and your gear to your favorite spot.

Love my Excursion. I can go anywhere comfortably, about 800 miles on a tank, in any weather, have all my gear out of the elements, and have plenty of room to lay my sleeping bag out and sleep anywhere/anytime.

I think it kinda depends on how far you have to travel when hunting... Have a buddy with a built geo tracker that is SWEET for close to home OR if some one else is towing the trailer... IF you have to have a trailer hauler/ hunting rig i think it would be hard to bead a 4 door 3/4-1 ton truck of some nature....

hey pool is that a 7.3? Nice buck on the back btw.
My crew cab half ton with a canopy and bed rug liner does well for me. I can sleep in it too.

Yeah, its a 7.3L and works out real well. The tall buck is M-rays from 2010, this thumbs up pic is from '09.

I really liked my 2000 Durango 5.9L that I had for a while. I put a set of BFR AT 33x10.5" tires on there and it went every where! After folding both rows of seats down in the back there was plenty of room for gear and critters. The 4x4 went out on it and it just wasn't cost effective to repair it.

Other than that it's always been full size trucks. My '98 F150 worked well till the 4x4 went out; the '04 F250 crew cab long bed was too clumsy; the '06 Silverado 1500 was a good compromise but not big enough to pull the boat; the '05 Silverado 2500 Duramax crew cab seems to be the perfect balance.

My vote is for a paid off rig.

I'm now running a 90 suburban, its got a 4" lift and 35's, pulls down acceptable mileage, in the neighborhood of 13.5-14 hwy, its a little underpowered right now, but I plan on warming up the 350and going from 3.73's to 4.56's in a few months.insurance is cheap, parts are cheap, and I love driving it.

Have had a 94' Ford Centurion C350 since 1997 and loved every minute of it.  Like phool, I too can go anywhere comfortably, in any weather, have all my gear out of the elements, and have plenty of room to lay my sleeping bag out and sleep anywhere/anytime.  In fact one could put a deer or two inside on top of all the gear on the trip home.  However, having a 460 gas engine, it just doesn't get the great mileage that phool's 7.3 gets.

Thus I made the move to an 02' Excursion with low miles and the 7.3 diesel last summer (thanks to phool's help).  Love it, all the attributes of the Centurion, plus now I get 21.5 mpg on the road.  Still have the Centurion as I haven't yet decided what to do with it...keep or sell.  I believe with it being 20 years old and a collector/classic vehicle it might just qualify for free plates now...not sure.  It only has 118k on it.

But the old truck got totaled. So I replaced it with this 2012 Nissan Frontier
I like these trucks because I can turn them around in small places. I am a tenter so I like having the camp gear in the trailer. And a animal is down cannot hurt that traier either.

I also. Have a hitch cargo rack when duck hunting.

That's hilarious! I can't believe that old car would still be driveable with all the weight. Man, why the heck didn't they bone those elk out, or at least quarter them. That's ridiculous!
