Hancock - Snoqualmie forest?
« on: March 24, 2014, 06:22:36 PM »
I'm considering purchasing a permit for the Snoqualmie forest. Last time I hunted in the area was a couple years ago and I'm interested if the prospects have improved. Has anyone on HuntWa taken a deer or bear in the area in the last couple years?

Thanks,

westside

I got a deer in there last October.  It was the only buck I saw and one of four total deer I saw last year.  I bought one again this year, but I'm not super sure that I will make a habit of it.  On the bright side, I probably only saw half a dozen hunters all season.  I calculated the cost of hunting far from home vs. driving in everyday from the city and I'm fairly certain buying a permit pencils out.  You may consider however that there is no late rifle season in that game unit(460).

Got one last year as well.  Only hunted it a couple of days and did not see another hunter.  Lots of good areas with little or no pressure.  The biggest buck I've seen was a stout 3x, but there has got to be bigger, just got to find them....

The pass also opens up your opportunities for some pretty good lake fishing and a couple cords of firewood if you need it.

I thought there was a list for these permits/keys and they go quickly?

Around 5 years or so there were only selling about 500 permits, and yes those went within a few days. Now they're selling 1,000 permits and have bout 400 left.

Is this permit good for the area going up past the Glacier Quarry ? If it is, I hauled a lot of dirt into 5 mile where the big, huge dirt pile is. I saw deer in there all the time with an occasional elk report from other dump truck drivers.
I couldn't care less about what anybody says..............

We hauled for HOS Brothers, so they might own it, or had a contract to dump dirt there. So I can't help you on that part. I actually used to come into Hancock ( Weyerhuaser (sp) ) from the Ben Howard Rd out of Monroe. That was many, many years ago.

Deleted my comment because I misread and thought you were asking about the area around the 5 mile pit.  Is Glacier Quarry the one off Tokul Creek?  If so, I don't see it marked as non-access on the map.

I think that is Tokul Creel. You go up past Glacier and come up on some houses and a stop sign. You go another couple hundred yards or so and there is a gate there. That's the only way I've been in except off of Ben Howard 30 + years ago.

I've entered on the Northern end many times.

Seen deer and bears.

There's a lot of land there.

I'm debating whether to go after it for mod elk or hunt south this year.

I park and bike in.

I think few people who hunt live in Seattle/Eastside, so 460 gets less pressure.  I see no reason why there wouldn't be a good supply of deer.  Last year a good amount of bulls were taken during modern.

That's my plan for this season. I plan on getting day permits for a few days in the summer to do some mountain bike scouting since it will be my first time up there. It is so much closer to home and the $8 per day fee is a heck of a lot less than I spend driving down to my usual spot. My only concern is a detailed map isn't provided unless you buy a motorized permit. I guess that's what REI is there for.
rather be hunting a blacktail

I biked about 12 miles back one day.  Last two miles were pushing the bike up a hill.  Never doing that again!

You can get the vicinity map from hancockrecreationnw which shows you the roads and gates.  Otherwise I just use google maps.

PM me if you want more info.
