Camera/Lens confusion
« on: November 22, 2008, 04:08:11 PM »
I was given a Kodak Easyshare Z712 IS camera as a gift. On their website Kodak has listed 1.4X Telephoto lens, 55mm. I want to photograph deer with it, so would this lens help and would it be worth the $149? Or does anybody know of a better lens to get? Or should I just use this as a crapper camera and invest in something better (provided the college budget allows). I don't know sh*t about a cameras (obvioiusly) so any info would help. Thanks.

You won't be getting deer with that outfit.  Thats generally a scenery type or wide angle type lens.  The 1.4 extender is a good one, at least in regards to helping your reach.  You need something that is AT LEAST a 200mm but preferably closer to 400.   Is this a digital or 35mm outfit?

It has a 12 power zoom with out the extender. I believe that would be 600mm. With a 1.4 extender it would be 840mm. Here is an article that will help you.

It is digital. All this camera talk sounds like Swahili to me.

I might just look for a new camera, because it sounds like this one won't cut it for that kind of stuff, right? I'm sure there is an post on here about quality cameras.

i can tell you the 18x on my fz18 is equivalent to 550mm or thereabouts, so i don't think the 12x is going to reach that far.
