Bonneville dam fish counts.
« on: April 16, 2014, 07:14:06 AM »
Daily fish count is starting to rise at what point do you plan your trip for drano or the wind?  I haven't been in a couple of years but would like to try it again this year.

Back in the day we never went till last weekend in April. Usually at 5000 per day.
Times change and now most guides start if they see 1000 per day for 5 days straight. But this can be a spotty fishing scenero.

With 7700 total over Bonni, and 3000 or so above the next dam, that leaves about 4000 fish in the Bonni pool with about 35 to 40% of those going up past Wind and Drano.

If you live 4 hours away and are only going to get 1 or so trips. It would be wise to wait!

My first trip there (Wind) last year was on May 1.  I did catch one & saw some others having success.  As I recall the dam count had been over 1000/day for less than a week, but increasing rapidly.  With that being similar to the situation now, I'm going go up there this weekend.

A lot of big fish this year, but would wait till more start over...  We'll be hitting it, but not in my boat, the wind sail makes for bad troll lines.. :bdid:  Rather my buddy deal with the stress of 30,000 other boats in the water jockeying for position while I sit back and fish.. :chuckle:

A well known guide is talking on Outdoor GPS right now about Drano Lake. He said he went 2 for 5 today and saw about 12 others caught. He says 2 days after the fish counts hit 1000/day its worth hitting Drano/Wind River. So go get'em!

Fished the Wind today, 7:30 - 4:00 & saw two fish caught.  (Of course there were more, buts that's all I saw).  All morning long about two dozen boats in sight, dwindling to 12-15 by 2:00.  But, the weather was good, alittle windy & showery in the morn, sunny & calm in the pm.  With the Columbia closed it was either Wind or Cowlitz which are equal distance for me.

Even though it was a slow day, I'm thinking its a worthwhile venture if a person doesn't have to far to drive as it'll be picking up fast.

The guy on outdoor GPS caught springers in Drano when 800 total had been over the dam. And one of them was 28 Lbs.

I like to fish the wind early, and drano mid may.
