Western archery quality apps
« on: April 22, 2014, 04:02:20 PM »
So with the pay to play going up everywhere is there any public land to hunt in the toutle or Margaret ?  Is there any reason to put in for either of those hunts if I don't plan on buying the access permit?  Takes away all the excitement!

Barely any in the Margaret. Toutle has a large chunk of state land, but there's no guarantee that Weyerhaeuser will allow access through their land to get to it.

The north  side of the Toutle should be open to access as it's almost all state land. Just take a left at the Toutle store and go about 2 miles and it's on the right. Can't remember the name of the road but it's easy to find on Google Earth.

I hope you are headed west when you take that left at the store :chuckle:  Otherwise you will need to go a lot further than 2 miles before you hit the sediment dam and take a right!

The limited selection of quality apps for western elk is a joke.  I know we can already kill bulls and cows in some units but the toutle is a one in 30 chance of drawing.  If I hunt the east peaches or rimrock both have fairly easy to draw tags and then the antlerless permit oppurtunitys as well over there are so much better.  Just seems way lopsided as far as permits available.  I know I can get into bulls over here it just seems way to hard to draw a tag.  Some of the best archery elk or archery deer hunt on the east side are 1-30 chance of drawing.  Seems dumb that the same odds apply for the toutle hunt.

To increase quality permits on the west side, they would have to eliminate some of the general season hunts. Are you okay with that?

That's a broad question.  When where what season?  If they just did away with east and west they would increase quality permits for all the east side hunts by a ton.  Yes some eastsiders would come west but then again some westsiders would go east.  I wouldn't care if they got rid of certain rifle seasons to increase archery permits.

Well that's awfully thoughtful of you. Giving up other people's hunts to help you.... They don't need as many quality permits on the west side as they do on the eastside because the general seasons are already open to branch antlered bulls. Unlike the eastside.

The question was rhetorical. I was just pointing out that the lack of special permit hunts on the west side is due to the liberal general seasons we have. Personally, I'd like to see it go to permit only elk hunting so the elk can be managed properly. I think an end to general season elk hunting is imminent now that access to Weyerhaeuser land is being restricted.
