Arees Spring Bear Thread
« on: April 26, 2014, 11:08:00 PM »
Not wanting to step on Klickboom or Sled's bear thread, here is another Monroe bear thread.  Hopefully, the thread I write this year will have fewer dumb questions than the one I wrote a couple of years ago. You guys gave me quite an education.

Today was the first chance I got to go looking. I had to run a turkey hunt for my son first. Now his turkey is on ice and I can chase bears. He rode along with me this morning while I was getting the lay of the land again.

It is surprising how much things change over a few years. I have not found my map from the last hunt with all the super secret bear spots marked so I had to go on memory today. I found most of the spots I was looking for but they have cut some new roads and blocked off others.

We didn't see any new peels in the area we checked, but we did find fresh sign.  We found one spot withe fresh poo in the middle of a patch of mowed grass.  (Sorry, but the poo pics are still on the camera.)  We went past the area and then came back through it later to find more poo.  I didn't need to check the temperature to tell how fresh it was.

This wasn't supposed to be a long trip so I didn't have my calling gear along. Next time I will be prepared.

The big question was, who took the shot just after noon? It couldn't have been far away and a single shot usually means hunting.

As far as I'm concerned, there cannot be to many bear threads. Since I don't have a tag this year, it's nice to ffollow your guys hunts. Good luck and don't be afraid to ask for help.

That would have been us on the way out.  I am swamped with work and I didn't make it out today.  Too much work is going to get in the way of my hunting.  :(

I got out again today and checked out a new gate. There was some scat in there and we spent an hour calling until the guy on the dirt bike showed up. After that we covered more ground and spotted a suspicious looking shadow by the side of the road. I jumped out and glasses it and it turned out to be a cub crossing the road. A rushed job with the camera got a couple of pictures of the bushes over his head.

We spent the rest of the time bumping into people.  There were bears in there, but there were too many people for my taste.

So far I have only seen old peels, but I haven't put the time in yet.

Yup, you need to get away from the people. Bears don't like people.

I got out again on Saturday and today.  Today I watched one skirting the edge of the reprod at about 100 yards.  He never stayed in the open long enough for a shot and my calling couldn't entice him back.  He looked really leggy so I don't think he was as big as the last one.  At least I can console myself with that thought.

I have been finding lots of bear poo and peals from the last couple of years.  Strangely, I have not found any peals from this year.  That puzzles me.  The last time I had the tag it was easy to find the peals once I knew what to look for.

It was nice having my son along on Saturday.  He got to watch a hen grouse and her brood crossing the road.

I will still keep looking as time allows.
