Choke advise Mossberg 500
« on: April 29, 2014, 11:10:59 AM »
Hi Everyone!

Been having a blast getting into turkey hunting this year! No birds in hand yet but still really enjoying it.

I had a quick question about Chokes.

I currently have a pump action Mossberg 500a. Its the version that was sold with a 18 inch "home defense" and 28 inch "hunting" barrel. The 28 inch barrel seems a little long but its what I have so I'm going with it.
It has 4 chokes that came with it, and I have been using the full, and have tried out 6 different shot/shell combos, and for the most part I'm getting great results out to about 30-35 yards.

However, After that, total mess. No matter what ammo/shot size I use, I'm just not happy with the result.

The logical next step is to buy an extra full choke, which I'm happy to do. The trick is there seems to be a LOT of them on the market, and I would really like to skip the trial and error (read that as buy a whole mess of chokes) and just go with something that is known to work well with this shotgun.
I don't need to shoot crazy far out, I just want to pattern well at 40-50 yards.
 Any advise is much appreciated.
Thank you!

If you can find a box of Winchester Longbeards you may not need another choke.  I've shot them through a couple shotguns with various chokes and they all pattern very well.

If not, the Tru-Glo strut stopper xtreme (SSX) has been a very good choke for me in several shotguns.

I shoot a 835 the HeviShot Mag blend 3 inch with good patterns out to 40 yards. A killing load but a little spendy at first for the sight in then one shell one bird is not so bad!

The wife shoots a Mossy 500 12ga we have a Carlsons choke tube in it and use Remington 3" 4X6 loads. Going to pick her up a box of Long Beard 3" 6 shot to try this summer. Long Beard shells pattern great in my 835.
