2007 muzzle blackie
« on: November 25, 2008, 05:50:05 PM »
The story for this one isn't all that exciting but I will give it to you guys anyway.  On the way up to the hunting spot, I spotted a deer in a small opening, it was already light cus I was late :)  I grabbed the binos and threw them up, it was a doe, but out popped this buck.  They payed little attention to me and he chased her up and over the ridge into the next draw and out of sight.  I grabbed my gear and off I went after them, not sure if they would be there or gone forever.  So as i crested the ridge i started grunting with my mouth hoping this would buy me enough time for a shot.  the oak leaves were crunchy and it is sooper thick where I hunt, so it was my only option.  I hear the deer spook a little but I grunt again and I can tell they stop running.  I hit a cow trail and start up it.  Out of nowhere a doe steps out at 50 yards she looks my way and trotts up the trail.  2 seconds later the buck takes her place and looks my direction.  Without hesitation I raise the gun.  Boom.  Through the smoke I can tell he falls in his tracks.  150 grains of powder and a 405 grainer.  Ouch :).  Kicks like hell but they don't go far.  Seconds later another buck steps into the trail, trotts off, then another.  The do was obvously hot.  Mine was the biggest one thank god, I would have kicked myself.  Not a giant, or as big as the wife's but... :'(.  Anyway he is a 4 by.  His backs are weak, but hey he is pretty good for a blackie.  Hope you enjoy, and hopefully I'll have some pics from this year in a week or so when my season starts here.
