Trail Cams for the High Hunt?

Anyone using trail cams for the high hunt?  Are people using them in the wilderness areas?

I have never used trail cameras but I think I'm going to buy one or two this year to start learning the process.  Last year I did very little scouting for the high hunt and felt like I was just wondering around aimlessly in the wilderness.  I want to step up my game this year.

Any strategy tips would be really helpful.  Thanks!

Trail cams in the wilderness can be a very valuable tool. I like to place mine throughout multiple drainages along a ridge, or throughout multiple elevations in a big drainage. Find heavily traveled game trails and there's a good chance you'll find out what kind of animals are living in that area. Its hard work when you have a few different cameras up, but it reveals a lot. Even taking in small salt blocks will give you a great idea of how many bucks are in the area and help you figure out which areas you should concentrate in.

Trailcams definitely help in the high country. In my experience you will get a ton of deer on them but right before the season activity really dies off.  Those deer/bucks are still in the area just harder to find. Getting up there right now while they are in summer mode and visible is a great way to know what an area holds.    Good luck!

Carrying salt in the wilderness will also be a good eye opener for what it will be like getting that deer out. My elk hunt will be at 9,000-10,000 feet this fall and even if I'm 1/2 mile from the road I may be so exhausted I may wind up paying a butcher for the first time in my life.

definitely will consider throwing a salt block out there.  only concern is that I plan to hunt the area for bear as well, and I don't want to do that if it would be considered hunting over bait.

anyone know if that counts or not?

The effort is worth it for the picks.  I have cool pics of bulls I hope to be able to hunt again in my lifetime.

In my way of thinking, the best thing trail cameras in the wilderness do is to give us hope.  The bucks will disappear off the map as far as the camera is concerned in the last week of August, but we still have the hope they are still there: that's all we need is hope.
