Winchester model 69 ?

Was at a gun store and noticed they had one of these that was badly tapped for a scope and had the sight base hacksawed off. Three hundred bucks! Holy smokes.  any how, the tag said no serial number.  Well, I have one as well, with the winchester fsctory peep sight, in much beyer shape.  Went home an looked. Sure enough,, no serial number.. Why is this?  Its an older rifle(34-41). Any idea on its value?

serial numbers weren't required on American made guns until the Gun Control Act of 1968
