Smoked a monster on turkey day
« on: November 29, 2008, 10:02:16 AM »
my season started on the 20th and it was kind of slow the only deer we were seeing were mid 120-130 class deer and lots of them. I hunted till sunday then had to go back to work for three days, let me tell you that was hard when I knew that the big boys were going to come out soon, but the 26th came soon enough and when work was done I was already packed and hitting the road for whitetail paradise.  Turkey day morning my buddy and myself were out at first light and and things were still a little on the slow side, spotted a nice 130 4X4 that was going crazy running down every doe in sight we sat there for about an hour then continued on whenwhen on another hill side we spotted a great 150 class 5x5 that looked pretty worn down from the rutt I thought about putting a stalk on him butt that went out the window when I saw the head of another hunter making a stalk on him from the up wind side needles to say he didnt get the deer.By this time it was time for my buddy Josh to get home and be with family for some turkey dinner. At noon I was back at it again but not alot was going on, at three I was set up with big Juan my 20-60x80 Swarovski SP watching 8 does and three dink bucks having a little too much fun. At 3:30 I decided to check on a spott that has always produced big in the past, when I hiked in to get a good vantage point I saw three does moving from the bedding area and the buck that I was looking for was right behind them he was well out of range and light was starting to fade so I had to make tracks fast, I ran off the ridge through a big flat crossed the creek and got ahead of them when the does came out into the field they were at 100 yards to my right and cought my movement when the buck came out he was about 200 yards out and on high alert the does started blowing and all hell broke loose behind me deer were blowing all around me while all this was going on the buck never moved so i got out my gunt tube and let out a few tending gunts then a loud roar. After that he puffed up and came into 80 yards on a dead run, one shot with my TC black diamond 45 cal and he was down he is my buck of a life time with a inside spread of 14 3/8. over 42 inches of mass. His gross score is 169 3/8. the local game bio checked the deer and aged him at a heart breaking 3 1/2 years old.

As I was going through the most recent posts I noticed this trail cam pic in the "A Random Photo" box to the right. (see link below)
Ya think this is the same buck? The similarity is pretty uncanny as far as I am concerned, especially the browtine on the left side of the buck. However, I have no idea where the trail cam pic was taken or where this monster Whitetail was harvested.

Great story and an awesome buck. I love that crab-claw brow tine on the left side. Should make a fantastic mount. Congratulations.

Those trail-cam pics really are similar. If it's not the same deer I can make a pretty good guess as to what the trail-cam deer would score.

Coasthunterjay, I take it that the trailcam pic I was refering to was yours?

I knew it almost immediately after I noticed the trail cam pic that it was the same buck. I wasn't 100% positive though until I saw your post. (I did notice that you also had a few other cam pics of the same buck)

Boy, he sure is a dandy, that's for sure!

Hopefully he was able to pass his genes along before head hunter dropped him! ;)

for sure, i watched him within 15 yards with about 8 does, and another 3 bucks, a few younger than him, but close to 140 -150 bucks......

great looking deer though.....

just never would come out early enough for me....had a close shot at him, but..... just didnt work out......

but the fame doesnt go to me, congrats on getting that deer man, makes me sad that hes gone, but atleast someone worthy got him.

Coasthunterjay, good on ya for congratulating head hunter on his fine harvest! I know folks who would be livid that someone else shot "thier" buck! :dunno:

We need more folks like you out there!

Hopefully a few of those "smaller" bucks that were with him get to this bruisers size.
