Methow turkeys
« on: May 28, 2014, 01:50:33 PM »
I know the Methow Valley is not exactly a turkey hot spot, but I see birds every time I'm there and saw quite a few this weekend on my cousins property.  I got my two in Klickitat county early in the season so I tried calling some in for my daughter this weekend with no luck.  On the way into Twisp we saw a hen with a bunch of poults so I'm wondering if once you start seeing poults is the breeding done and do the toms stop responding to calls?

Most hang out in the valley on private.
The only man who never makes a mistake, is the man who never does anything!!
The further one goes into the wilderness, the greater the attraction of its lonely freedom.

Most of the breeding should be done, but they don't always realize it and they are still a social bird ... so you can still call them in. Call soft and sparingly.  If yelps, clucks, purrs, etc doesn't seem to work, then try some gobbler yelps or even gobbles as this may attract bachelor groups.

I called my bird in on the 25th. I did little calling and it was soft but he came.
