Westport Kings
« on: May 30, 2014, 11:11:23 AM »
With the Calm Dig sunday, and the Salmon opener, are any of you going out for some kings?  The weather doesnet look all bad early on..  NW wind 5 to 15 kt...becoming W to 10 kt. Wind waves 2 ft or less. NW swell 6 ft at 8 seconds. Im not an expert on judging the waves and tides, and I have never been over the bar... I will be in an 18' boat....  Any suggestions? I have all the necessary safey gear, and I feel comfortable with my boat, as I just had it 40miles out during Halibut, but like I said I have never been over the Grays Harbor Bar... :dunno:

Others might disagree but I think that might be a little lumpy for an 18' boat.

I would go to the coast gaurd station there and ask what they think

I won't be going, that forecast is pretty snotty. Small craft advisory all weekend from what I see

Add an decent morning ebb to the lump and it could be more than you want on your first time crossing.

Thanks for the advise.  I think I'll get clams and the head to the sound for crab.

Good call, I have a feeling the bar will be closed after 5 am for a while. The wind is smoking out here.

Crossed the bar at 445 and was sporty at N jetty. Lumpy till 8, the NW wind that was predicted never really showed.

We were down there clam digging.   It was not bad at 11am when we we're in down town Westport.   Should of brought the boat.

I have caught a ton of kings this time of year. I'm hoping to get down there soon. I have a few nice spots to hit to fill the boat

Nice! How many miles round trip do you think you ran?
I felt like a one legged cat trying to bury a terd on a frozen pond!
