Action this time of year...
« on: May 30, 2014, 08:56:54 PM »
Just this last winter I got seriously into coyote hunting... so I am still learning aloooootttt. I was under the impression that the good hunting, and really only time worth hunting was during the winter. So, winter ends, and I log of huntwashington for a while but I recently got back on and see some people are still out hunting? What's the deal?

I got skunked this season, so if there is still viable time, count me in!

What's the action like this time of year? Do you switch your tactics/calls up? Mating calls, or distress calls?

I may be taking a trip to WSU in a few weeks, and Would LOVE to get some more time in with my AR.

There is still action to be had.  I hunt them year round not just fall/winter. I enjoy hunting them and also the benefits of lowering the population in my hunting areas.  Coyotes are one of our most renewable resources. The more you kill the more pups they will have.  From April to June I normally just spot and stock or ambush. June is normally when I start calling again.  I start with subtle calling but by July I just let it rip.  This time of year fawn or baby gotten tail will often produce.  get out and kill some dogs and save some fawns.

Do you have room for one more on a trip?  I would love to join up and smash some dogs.

Spotted lots of coyotes on the move mid-day last weekend just West of Colfax. It was sunny and pushing 80* and they were still active. If your heading that way I'd expect you could get on a few.

May and June is the time to break out the howler.  IMO the most exciting time to hunt Wiley!  Buggers come in like alligators, ears back teeth showing...!!

Locate, Infiltrate and Imitate is the name of the game right now.  Use the howler to locate dens.  Infiltrate their denning zones undetected.  Then imitate a hurt pup.  Should be good until about 4th of July in most areas.

Only reason winter is usually best is because they are easier to see and the pelts are nicer.  But, as far as hunting and calling spring and early summer is dang hard to beat.
He asked, Do you ever give a short simple answer?  I replied, "Nope."

I agree, this is one of the most exciting times to hunt coyotes. The come running in at full speed. If you get out at daylight, you can be home in time for the family to roll out of bed.

Did one set on Sunday morning. One dog came into 10 yards (from nowhere) but never stopped as he left on the same trail I walked in on. A couple minutes later, the dog pictured came in cautious at first, then came in to about 10 yards from the caller, turned and ran. He then stopped at about 40 yards, but took off again before I could get a standing shot, so I aimed a little higher and arrowed him on the run! Rolled him, he got up and took off with my arrow and blood gushing. He didn't make it far.

Video to come in the near future...

Let 'em keep nurturing more targets.  Kill one this time of year and you'll miss out on the four that would have been running around this fall.  Four pups starving in a den doesn't make it worth it to me this time of year.  Let them get a little bigger and I've got no problem though.

I've done a lot of calling this time of year and have never shot a wet female. Most seem to be last years pups. If the pups are weaned the male and any siblings that are still hanging around will care for the pups. So has anyone on here shot a wet female?

more you kill the more pups will be born next year. Coyotes are one of our most re-newable resources.  Ill dig up the study I read and post up a link, its a great read for new and vetrian coyote hunters alike.

All I do in the spring/summer is coyote hunt... it's not too bad. I use coyote hunting as an excuse to get out and scout for deer.
