Toenail Ripped off

My lead cur ripped his toenail off his pinky toe on his front foot.  Talk about tender, ouch, I feel for him.  How long have you seen an injury like that take to heal.  Thanks

Mine took about a month but it was still tender.  Took a while before she would put weight on it.

My son was riding a Sears Lifestyler stationary bicycle we owned.  He was nine years old.  I just got home from work and had placed my key in the door when he let out a horrific yell/scream.  I thought it was just another fight with his siblings and he was at the end of his rope but actually he had his big toe caught between the two flat steel bars that created the circular movement of the exercise bike (kind of like the old style trains).  He severed 95% of his toe.  Once I realized what he had done I ran over, grabbed his toe and pressed it back into place and started to wrap it up with the bandages we had in our First Aid Kit.  911 was called the ambulance came and off to Harborview we went.  Thank God for Harborview being one of the two places in the state that handle that type of injury. I cringe everytime I think about it.  He was so "blessed"!  There are two nerve bundles that service the big toe.  He severed one of them. the other bundle remained in the 5% of toe that remained attached.  Keep in mind the cut was straight across but at a slight angle.  Today he has approximately 90% of his original feeling back in his toe and only has to contend with a damaged nail bed.  His toe looks totally normal until you look at it real close.  If it weren't for Harborview he would have lost his toe.  The exercise bike was sent to the dump!

I "really" feel for the toe nail being ripped off and I get that cringe feeling like I did with my son.  I pray for a speedy recovery.

   That made me cringe, nothing worst then seeing your kids hurt!!  Glad he is better now.

My bird dog did it about 2 years ago.  It bothered him for months.  I stopped hunting him about 4 weeks and the first time out (hunted him about 3 hours) he was fine.  However, the next time out about 10 days later we were in some snowy/icey conditions and he boogered it up again.  Luckily it was pretty near the end of the season.  Took another couple months before he was finally completely healed. 

Try some of the EMT gel on it.  That stuff seems to work really good.  I used it on a cut on my dog's leg while out in MT and it healed great and he didn't miss a beat.

Thanks, I think this is going to put him out of comish the whole season.  Several guys on my hound sites are saying their dogs were down for nearly a year.  You watch now I'll get drawn for ID hound permit!!

Ive hunted hounds several years and with friends and Ive seen this several times. Best turnaround and back on the trail was 6 weeks. We daily took the dog to the beach and forced them to run in the salt water for two weeks. This kills any infection and  the new skin is tougher also keeps them from tearing it open again. they will hate it at first but stay after it.

OUCH!!!    The ouch is for the gas bill, beach is 6+ hours a way!

My blackmouth cur ripped one clean off this summer.  She was pretty tough about it and stayed on her feet, barely favoring her good leg and not slowing her down at all.  It healed up pretty quick, 6 weeks.  It might be a different story in the snow, especially if you're putting boots in him.
