What are the best Idaho deer/elk permit hunts?
« on: June 03, 2014, 10:47:05 AM »
I have always put in for 11 for deer but only do one selection.  Elk I used to only do 18 but it seems to be going down hill a bit.  What are the best deer/elk special hunts to apply for?  Looking for trophy animals, tough to draw units only. PM would be great, thanks !

I don't think anyone will answer that until after the application deadline on Thursday.

I'd probably take a late 11 tag for deer.   A 40 rifle tag, second.

For elk, a 46 muzzy tag or a 40 rifle tag.

I used to like the looks of some of the hunts down on the Nevada border for elk and deer both.  Cant recall numbers.   11 would be good for deer.

Nothing wrong with 11 for deer.  If you want a really big bull I would look at units 46, 40, and 54.  Horrible odds but huge bulls.

I think you guys are on the right track with the units mentioned, although I would mention that there are some top trophy quality mule deer scattered all over central and southern Idaho. Idaho has good elk hunting across the state and a good ratio of 6 point bulls in most units, but Idaho does not produce a lot of top end bulls, for top trophy class bulls I would look closer at other states like AZ, UT, NM, or NV, and parts of MT, CO, OR and even WA.

Ive been trying for wa trophy elk and will continue to when I'm not selected, I need to do some research on top elk units in other states for sure.  The thing about Idaho for me is its cheap to apply, especially since I already hunt elk there and you only have to buy a hunting license to apply.  But your right bearpaw about trying other states! Thanks for the input guys!
