What 2 stroke oil are you running in your outboard?
« on: June 04, 2014, 07:22:27 AM »
I am using Mercury currently, will probably stick to it. Is Pennzoil really that bad for your motor? At $17.99 a gallon at wally world, its considerably less expensive than the Mercury oil. The dealer said that Quicksilver is the same as Mercury oil. Any thoughts?

I’ve moved on to 4 strokes but I used Supertech  for years in several outboards and had zero problems.  $12/gal at Wally world.

I have always used Quicksilver and have had zero issues with any of my outboards. Not saying its the best just giving my experience.  They all probably work about the same.

Super Tech is the best bang for the buck.

As long as it meets TC3 requirements I'm good with the cheap stuff and I also run 87 octane gas. I also put some seafoam in every time I fill up.

TCW3 is an outdated standard that isn't even maintained any more.  i definitely wouldn't recommend running something that "isn't" TCW3 compliant, but it really doesn't mean much any more.

that said, i've always ran the cheap stuff in my big motors with no issues.
you can still get gas in heaven, and a drink in kingdom come,
in the meantime, i'll be cleaning my gun

I'm running wally world pennzoil in my motor now.  It's being repaired for the second time now.  I don't think the two are related though.  The motor is about 30 year old and hadn't been run in about 15 years.  The first break was a throttle issue and the last time we had it out, the lower seal blew out.  I have read nothing but bad things about the Pennzoil stuff though (after I bought a bunch :bash: ) and will be switching to Quicksilver when I get the motor back.

All depends on what kind of motor you're running.  I'll be damned if I'm using cheap Wally oil in a $15K Yamaha, when they call for and highly recommend Yamalube. :twocents:

My 1995 Force can't tell the difference but it does smoke less with Yamalube. I don't know why. Currently using West Marine house brand w/o any issues.

Quicksilver is mercury.  I run synthetic in my sportjet. Cheaper oil will probably work. But I don't want to take a chance. Saving a few dollars a gallon on a ten thousand dollar motor doesn't add up to me. Just a small price to pay.

You're the kind of customer a manufacturer loves.  Paying for an overpriced product because it says Yamaha,Honda,Mercury, etc on the label.

LMAO. Really? The extra $50-100 per year to always have a top running engine that has yet to ever let me down with money on the line is more than well worth it. To think for a minute that switching to save a few bucks is completely stupid. I've seen far too many high performance engines falter when people think they save a buck here and there. Not this guy. :)
