Boots on the ground and you will find elk. They are in there. Don't expect an easy one they will get pushed to the bottoms on opening morning. If ot is during rifle season and you aren't finding any stop at some camps tell them your son has a cow tag and ask if they have seen any. They we probably be willing to share if they don't have a cow tag themselves and there aren't very many given out.

I've got 3 of the 5 youth cow tags accounted for now. Agree with emac. It's a great place for a family camping  trip. Make the most of it and get some scouting done.

You may want to think about your camping situation, there are plenty of good camping spots.  However, if you are not equipped to setup camp you may consider renting one of the guard station cabins, if that is not an option then it is a long haul into Asotin.  Pomeroy has a dump of a motel, it looks pretty nasty from the outside.  Ditto what the others said, there are cows, get your feet on the ground and get into the trees, walk up on the fingers and glass.

A couple of years ago the game Dept was planting barley SW of the Black ranch, it was like ants heading for a picnic at dusk. They also hang out on the open ridges to the east before season. The problem was there was some yahoo hitting the fields before daybreak and blew them down into the canyons.

I live in Clarkston so its in my backyard and I've spent the last 35years wandering around Lick creek. So if you need help let me know. Maybe we can get together. I'm not going to give you my hotspots, oh wait I don't have any hotspots. Elk are were you find them and it changes from year to year.

Inland nw wildlife me too. Do you know Tim and Wannda. Always looking to help out the youth of tomorrow. It is a good unit. It is my unit. Base camp at 5500' so get there early to let your body adjust. If you have not received any help or are looking for more hit me up we are going down in a couple of weeks to set up game cams.

Park on Fitzgerald Rd and enter state game land. Walk the logging road down, and go thru the gate into Lick Creek. Leave the gate the way you find it. Continue down, zig zag left at the bottom for 300 yards, go right up the road thru the forest. You're in Elk territory. and 1 ridge over. . Get up there before light and it is a real show. Good luck!
