Comments Needed to Preserve Protected River Status

Friends of The Skykomish River

Jul 21, 2014 — Comments are due no later than Friday July 25, 2014 to the NWPCC (Northwest Power and Conservation Council), urging them NOT to allow utility companies or other developers to weaken the program in the NWPCC on "Fish and Wildlife Protections." The Snohomish County PUD wants an exception to the NWPCC Plan that prohibits dams of any kind on fish-bearing rivers and streams in their region.

The problem with this is the opposition to what PUD plans to do is not even dam the river but to drill a side tunnel and send some water thru this to generate power. However throw out the word dam just to get the negativity out there. They will also contribute to the trucking of fish over the 3 sets of falls.

So, you make an exception for a "little" diversion, if that's the case, but where does it stop?  The next exception might not be so small.

If we need more electricity, it sounds like this won't produce a whole lot, why not keep the power that is generated on the Columbia in the PNW instead of selling it to CA?  Let them screw up their natural systems, keep it in their own back yard?

I don't fish or boat on this river to personally care from that point of view, it just seems that if a natural river is protected, big money shouldn't be allowed to cherry pick exceptions.  Again, where does it stop?

If i remeber correctly this is near an impassable Falls that fish cannot pass on their own.  :twocents:

So?  Even if there are no fish above it, any slowing of the water could increase temperatures downstream and cause possible problems for the fish there.

Maybe I should just delete this thread since no one seems to care?   :dunno:

Am I missing something, there was nothing about the Snoqualmie River in the program that was up.  :dunno:
