Like the last A-Bolt I had.. good rifle if you dont mind the "made in japan" label on the barrel.. but yeah, well made and accurate in my experience. All the weatherby vanguards are made by Howa of Japan...

Howa's used to be a great inexpensive way to go for a donor action for a custom build.  You could buy them used for $275-$300 complete.  Then everyone figured out how good they were and now they cost almost as much as a Rem 700.

Bought a used Howa lightning 270win for $300 three yrs ago.  Thru the cheap plastic stock away, put a Timney trigger in it and had it rebarreled to a 6.5-06AI and it's a death ray shooting Berger 140's at 3150fps.

Great shooters. The Vanguards are beautiful with the walnut stocks. Great rifles, I would buy another.

Old thread, but thought I would chime in.
I have a Howa 1500 chambered in .270.  I'm always pleasantly surprised with its accuracy. With good glass it's a nice shooter. Comes free floated and has a pretty decent trigger. It's a bit on the heavier side and the bolt isn't butter smooth. Mine has the hogue stock and it is comfortable and durable. I have no issues taking 350+ yard shots with it.
This is my "go to" deer gun lately. Especially for bad weather.

Yup, it's heavier, but more accurate.
